DAY ONE: 2:01 am
KITCHEN
Just as the other twelve awoke in the auditorium to the fake screams and grainy film, three other players blinked awake to the steady, thrumming beat of a leaky faucet and the cold press of an opened freezer door. Three women---all proud, all strong, all mistrustful---awake in the kitchen, surrounded by industrial steel counters and the smell of rot.
Just as before, there are notes and packages wrapped in twine, each more mysterious than the last.
Libby has two gifts, one wrapped and one too large to pull paper over. The first is a
rock, polished smooth and faintly luminous. The second gift is a
short bow, attached to which is a note reading JAGGED LITTLE PIECES, MYRIADS OF KINDRED SOULS.
Kasimira's gifts are small and fairly simple: a
beaded necklace and a
handheld radio set to channel 3. Her note, tangled in the twine, says LISTEN WELL.
Julia's gifts are deadly useful, if not confusing. She is given a
ring of five keys marked with 201-205 and a
hand-gun with thirty bullets. Her note reads STOP LOCKING THE DOORS.
