GOD DAMN IT I CAN'T FIGURE MY LITTLE PONY OUT.
I caved and seached for it on YouTube to see what the hell was going on, because this reminds me a lot of that episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation when everyone gets addicted to that game so some aliens can take over the Universe. Something like that, whatever, the point is that it's now *everywhere*, including with strangers I don't even know telling me about it.
So, fine. At the risk of watching television ever again (seriously I just don't want to, I love to hate modern television, it's poetically elitist, and I gotta compensate for my disastrous vacuum of self-esteem somehow), someone on YouTube was kind enough to provide...*glances*...like three thousand hours of footage or so.
Let's just do Season One and see what's going on. Oh, my knowledge of MLP:FIM so far includes the following:
1. Sonata Dusk, who I think was an antagonist in one of the movies or something, is kinda cute. I like her. The blue skin really works on her. That's also a really awesome name. Sonata. Dusk. Damn, if I ever slip on my plan to never have kids for everyone's sake, I gotta consider Sonata.
2. I think they have human forms. I'm pretty sure they do, and that's not just fanart.
3. People *love* Rainbow Dash. In every way someone can. They love her so goddamned much you can't even avoid the waves of hentai out there. Don't act like you don't know what I'm talking about, you do. Some of it's "human" form, some of it isn't.
4. More importantly, from what I gather, the appeal of the show to every demographic is that it's happy. Like, really happy. The "maybe there's hope for us" kind of happy. I'll dig that, it's why I told television to go fuck itself in the first place.
5. The show was invented to go along with the new toy line and somehow became way, WAY more popular than the actual toys. Naturally the critics didn't expect that because they're critics, and their professional opinions, which they get paid (I think) to voice, have never influenced anyone in the history of anything ever.
6. The cast lives together in a house and otherwise do human things. This seems important, but I don't know why, not yet.
SO, let's watch episode one.
First things first, credit to the VAs where due. I dig the voice acting already.
Lauren Faust really is talented. Damn it, everything she touches turns to gold. I miss when cartoons had adult in-jokes you didn't get as a kid, but then it hit you 20 years later that's what they meant. Cool.
Whoever the villainess is, Sonata Dusk was better at it than this first one is. And I don't even know who the hell she is except, like, a vocalist or something. She doesn't even act like an antagonist, so I dunno why she's labeled as such. She's not the brightest, but she's cute about it, not obnoxious. I mean, if someone's going to be ditzy, they need to be the cute kind of ditz, but I'm straying off-topic.
End credits song is kinda meh, and I kinda get hooked on shows that have unusually cool themes. It's not exactly season one of School Rumble's ending theme, but nothing is, and I don't expect anything to ever be. Except maybe Vandread. Oh, and no FUCKING way, Tara Strong voices Twilight Sparkle?
Overall: Well...I dunno. I mean, I can sort of get why everyone likes it, but I can't imagine getting hooked on it. Maybe I need to watch another to see what's going on. Or maybe other seasons, the ones without Lauren Faust heading them (that hurts to even think about), have more to them. It's not like me to miss the niche in something, so I'm sure that's what's happening.
In any case, this was what I was doing while the laundry was running. Time to dry it just the way I like it.
Oh, and I know one of you knows way more about this show than I do, so please feel encouraged to get in touch with me. I miss you, anyway, guy with the same name as me.
