I saw a bumper sticker today that said "Uncle Sam Wants You to Speak English." So I swore at him in Latin.
I did a discussion section for Comic Art that started with
this image from an early adventure/aviation comic, then moved to
ratcreature's
scans of Wizard's "How to draw comics," on drawing women in (superhero) comics, and then
vito-excalibur's amazing
redrawings of those pages to highlight the disparity of treatment of male and female figures, and then brought up the
Mary Jane figurine as the coup de grace. It was a beautiful thing. There were audible gasps by the time I got to MJ, and one young man asked, "Is that a joke?" Yay, undergrads.
Tomorrow we will talk about the Comics Code, McCarthyism, and book burning. I expect I will need to do some educating on the actual definitions of Communism, socialism and Fascism. I look forward to this opportunity. Here,
have a gallery of images of book-burners.
I have agreed to teach an online course over Winter session, which shouldn't be too hard as it's the course I've taught about 6 times now, including partly online last Fall because of my maternity. Also, it means more monies, which is good. And I finally took a deep breath and inquired to my former advisor at Williams how to go about teaching a Winter Study, because I had mentioned several times (and she had shown eager interest each time) that I could do an Old Irish Winter Study. I'm woefully out of Old Irish practice, but prepping and teaching a low-intensity month of it is exactly what I need to get back in the saddle.
That's the most exciting of my recent doings, I guess. What have you been up to?
