So yeah. The iPhone is out. You may have heard of it... What can I say that has not already been said? Let me see:
- Sexy
- Brilliant
- Awesome
- Wow
Check, check, check and check. All already said by others.
People who know me know I am an Apple fan, love my iPod and go through cell phones like no ones business. Having worked in the telecom side I used/got a lot of phones and tried out the majority of the carriers. Lately I have been meaning to get myself a crackberry or other smartphone because I wanted a lot of the features out there. Maybe because I expect a lot out of the tech I buy I found myself very dissatisfied with the current state of smart phones. Yes, they have the features I wanted, but the cost for email and certain data services coupled with menu and navigation systems seemed poor. Being a fan of Apple's interface design probably helped shape my opinion. I was hopeful that Apple was going to make good on all the rumors of an "iPhone" and that it would be awesome.
For the most part I feel vindicated in holding out.
If you have not looked, check out the Apple website and gander at the sexiness that is the iPhone. I won't bore you. I will only state that this phone is nearly perfect as a unit. Yeah there may be some nice features which will come out in the future, but as a first stab Apple did a lot of good in introducing this product. I am more upset by the choice of carrier.
Cingular is a capable partner, but Apple could have done a lot better. EDGE and GSM and good protocols, but CDMA (Verizon Wireless and Sprint) is far better. I planned on moving back to VZW after my experiment with Cingular proved to be dissapointing (reception, service area and call quality not good as VZW... blah blah blah). If the iPhone was on Verizon I would already be selling off my kidneys to own an iPhone. As it stands, I am a Cingular subscriber, so I may very well be an early iPhone adopter, but I will wait as long as my determination lasts. Cingular has an exclusive deal for now, but that is not why I am holding out. Verizon Wireless may come in the future... The real reason I wait is that I never buy first gen hardware. There are always bugs.
Anyway, this is the part where I apologize for ranting and bid you adieu.
