Chapter 5
“It seems to be,” the nurse said to Shige sharply, “ his fainting was caused by extreme stress and the fact that his arm is broken in two places. How he got this broken arm, I don’t know, and how he didn’t notice the pain, I wouldn’t know. He needs to rest.” and she turned on her heel to walk out into the waiting room.
Shige looked down at Koyama’s pale face. How could I let this happen? he asked himself. It’s all my fault that he’s hurt; all my fault that he fainted. Why am I such a bad person? he put his face in his hands, sniffling slightly.
“Ugh… Shige…?” he heard a quiet voice ask. “Shige, where am I?” He didn’t look up, but instead looked away at the poster on the wall which read, “AN APPLE A DAY KEEPS THE DOCTOR AWAY!” with an apple, biting into another apple and-- wasn’t that cannibalism?
“You’re in the school clinic. You fainted.” Shige replied quietly, full of shame. “And it’s all my fault…” he added, so Koyama couldn’t hear him. Koyama tried to sit up, and winced a bit when his elbow hit the pillow.
Koyama put a hand on his shoulder; he was so frail, Shige thought he could break him if he-- oh yeah, he already broke him. “Shige… Shige-- look at me.” he demanded, although when Shige looked up, the gentle face looking back at him was so pale, Shige almost looked away again. Before he could, Koyama put the hand that was on his shoulder on his cheek. “About yesterday, what you said, I--”
“Ah-- It’s okay. I know what you’re wanting to say.” Shige said.
Koyama broke into a grin. “So you know I li--”
“--You just want to be friends. I understand.” Koyama’s face fell.
“No, I do--” Koyama wanted to say, but Pi burst into the room, looking disheveled. His hair was a mess, and it looked like he hadn’t slept since he found out Koyama had fainted. He was wearing a one-piece pikachu pajama, with the hood and the tail and everything. Even booties.
“I said only one visitor at a time!” the nurse shouted. “The poor boy needs to rest!”
Pi was followed by Toma, and the nurse was shouting, high-pitched at the both of them.
“Um-- Maya-sensei.” Koyama said quietly. “You’re being a bit loud. And I’m awake now, so…”
“Ah--, I’m sorry Keiichiro-kun. And besides, we’re close, you can just call me Miki.” she smiled at him, and then sighed. Miki-san had long brown hair and she had very nice skin. Although, she had bags under her eyes, as if she wasn’t getting much sleep.
“How is your husband doing?” Koyama asked politely.
Miki-san’s eyes widened a bit, and she glanced toward the window, as if someone was watching. Shige followed he gaze and saw something black move out of sight.
“He-- he’s been so good to me.” she said, glancing up and to the right. “He makes me breakfast, and-- he’s a good cook! Just last night, he made me-- er, he made… uh… oh goodness, what was it that he made? Haha, my memory is getting bad, Keiichiro!” she laughed, but Shige noticed the laughter didn’t reach her eyes-- she was lying. Koyama laughed along with her, but, again, it didn’t reach his eyes. Maya Miki was lying, and Koyama knew it.
“Anyway, Keiichiro. I have a lot of paperwork to fill out-- I’ll come back when you can go back to your dorm, and I’ll give you your directions.” She hurried into her office, before Koyama could reply.
“She’s lying through her teeth.” Toma said, before Shige could get to it. Toma was wearing regular jeans and a blue t-shirt, he looked as if he wasn’t very worried about Koyama, like he had brushed his hair and teeth, and, you know, slept. The complete opposite of Pi. Although Shige could tell he was worried on the inside.
“What’s the story with you and her, Kei-chan?” Shige asked. Toma nodded, but Pi just sat there, staring at Koyama’s arm in the green cast.
“My mom and her were friends, she used to help us a lot with money problems. She would lend us money for food and bills, and even tell us we could come over to her house for food any time we wanted to. She used to be an otokoyaku*, you see, so she got quite a good pay. She was so helpful, not even asking for anything in return. Then, when mom passed away, she offered to pay for tuition for Nee-chan’s college. Then I began living on my own, and got a part-time job. That’s how I met Pi.
I was a part-time nurse-- shut up, Toma, I was just a part-timer-- and Pi had fallen on his bike and got a crazy deep cut. Well, nobody else was free, so I had to take care of it. That’s also how I met Ryo-chan. He had been riding bikes with Pi, and he had gotten a few cuts.”
Shige was now paying close attention to Koyama. “R-ryo-chan? I’ve never heard of him before. Is he rich, like YamaPi?”
Koyama laughed. “Ryo-chan? No, not really. But he’s not poor, like me, either. He’s-- in the middle. He works as a bartender at a nightclub, so he gets good pay, but he gives it to charity, most of the time, so… He acts all big and tough, but in reality, he such a big softie. You should have seen him when Pi was in the hospital. ‘Is he gonna be okay? You’ve gotta help him; he’s my best friend!’ he said, like it made a difference whether he was his friend or not.” Koyama laughed even louder. Pi chuckled nostalgically.
“Anyway!” Koyama exclaimed. Shige was glad to see that his energy was coming back, and the color was slowly refilling his face. “Back to Miki-san. Of course she was lying. When she got married, her husband and her had an argument about whether she could be an otokoyaku anymore, and when I next saw her, she was wearing a sweater-- it was summer--, and said she wasn’t going to be an otokoyaku anymore.”
Pi seemed to have cheered up a bit. “Do you think it could be…" he looked at Toma, who looked equally as shocked.
“…DV*?"
Shige looked up to see Koyama's reaction to what Pi and Toma had suggested. The color had again drained from his face, but he looked determined. Oh, God, no. Not this.
“Well, we’ll just have to find out then, won’t we?” Koyama said loudly. They had been huddled together, whispering.
“Find out what?” The group of four boys all jumped, and Koyama winced a bit. Miki-san was standing behind them, and she laughed. “Sorry, boys, but you were all sitting so closely, and whispering, and I was just sitting in my office, and I got done with my paperwork, I just--” she had to stop talking, because she was laughing so hard.
“That’s so rude!” Koyama exclaimed, but he was laughing also. Before he knew it, Shige was laughing, and soon, all four boys and the nurse were laughing loudly.
“Ahhh~, really.” Miki-san said, wiping a tear from her eye. “Okay. Anyway, Keiichiro. I know your sister is having her classes right now, but do you want me to call her?”
“No, that’s fine.” Koyama said. He looked down at his hands.
“Sorry.” Miki-san said. “I-- I forgot.” she added quietly. “…Um! So, here are the painkillers if your arm starts to hurt. Take only one, because they’ll make you drowsy. Here.” She handed him the small orange bottle of white pills. “And then, these are your ‘discharge’ papers. Don’t really need them, just that Kitagawa-san said he wanted to know who comes and goes. Just sign here.” She handed him the papers.
“Ah.” Koyama said, looking around for a solid surface. Pi gestured to take the bottle, and Koyama handed it to him, but when he was about to turn around so Koyama could use his back, Koyama said, “Shige, turn around.”
“Eh?” Shige said, but turned around anyway. He felt Koyama holding the papers against his back with his cast, and writing with his left hand. It took a long time, because he tried to be neat, but he wasn’t writing with his dominant hand. “It-- It tickles…” Shige mumbled, trying not to squirm.
“Deal with it.” Koyama laughed, and when he got done writing, he tapped on Shige’s shoulder, making him turn around. Shige handed the papers and pen to Miki-san and Pi handed him the bottle.
Miki-san smiled. “Alright, now, I’d like you to come back in two weeks to get that cast off.”

~~Two Weeks Later~~
“I. Can’t. Believe. That. I. Didn’t. Get. This. Cast. Off.” Koyama growled. It was lunchtime, and Koyama, Shige, Pi, and Toma were sitting together at “their” table.
Shige laughed. Koyama had gotten his first cast off, but then got his new waterproof cast on.
“You’re sad about being able to swim after two weeks?” Toma laughed.
“Well, no, that’s a good thing, I guess…”
“And you’ll want to, because SPRING BREAK STARTS TOMORROW!!” Pi yelled, and the whole cafeteria stood up and cheered. Pi and Toma sat down, laughing.
“You know what?” Koyama yelled suddenly. “I am glad I can swim now. When I first got the old cast off, it was crazy though, I guess I had sweat when it was on, and my arm was all wrinkly, but it was itchy when I had te cast on, and it was off and I was like, ‘Ahhh~’.” Koyama closed his eyes and turned his face to the ceiling, smiling. Toma and Pi laughed, but Shige was silent.
“Shige! Shige!” Koyama snapped in front of Shige’s face, and Shige snapped out of his thoughts.
“What?” he asked. “Oh, I was just thinking about Miki-san.”
Koyama grinned. “That’s right. Starting tomorrow, we’re investigating!”
“Oh Jesus.” Shige said in English.
“Oh Jesus?” Koyama asked. “You’re gonna use English on me now?” Pi Toma, and Shige laughed. “You know what, make it up to me.” he yelled.
“Eh?” Shige asked.
“Since my right hand is unavailable, feed me.” and he opened his mouth childishly. Toma, Pi, and Shige laughed again, but Shige complied without complaining.
