Summary: Hayato is living in the present, but he can’t seem to get over the past. A year after Yankumi supposedly fixes everything, the real story begins.
“I fucking hate you.”
…Where to begin? My name? What I’m doing? Where I am? Well, let’s start off with that. My name is Yabuki Hayato. I’m sitting on frozen rock. I’m in a cave with the guy who I‘ve hated for the past year, and yet somehow, I would hate to see him taken away from me.
“It’s not my fault we’re sitting in a cave, Ryu.” I grumbled, trying to pull my jacket so it would cover more of my chest that was barely covered by a ripped t-shirt.
Ryu turned to me, furious. “It’s not your fault, Hayato?! Really?! Because I quite think it is your fault!” he screamed across the cave.
It all started about a year ago…
We were all sitting in the classroom, yelling and talking. Tsucchi, Take, Hyuuga and I were messing around, and nobody expected a woman to come into the room. Hell, nobody expected anyone to come into the room. But someone did, and when she did, we paid no mind. If it was a woman, she would be gone only after today. Wearing a red jersey, she waltzed into our room, with two pigtails, and glasses, looking ever so… so… confident. It made you want to slap the smile off of her face. The room fell silent.
She set down the thin book that was in her hands onto the podium in the front of the room, and turned to the chalkboard, writing down something that no-one cared about. I kept my eyes on her, head low, trying not to be caught staring.
“Ehh. Good morning everyone, from now on, I’ll be in charge of this class. My name is Yamaguchi Kumiko.” the woman said, interrupting my thoughts, smiling brightly. Our eyes met for a split second.
“What? It‘s a woman and I was waiting for the new teacher coming.” I said loudly.
“And she’s not hot at all. She‘s a disgrace to womanhood.” Tsucchi retorted, waving his fan around. I couldn’t hold back a quick laugh.
“You can call me Yankumi!” she continued.
“Yankumi?” I heard Take yell, and turned quick, thinking he knew her or something. “I don’t care if you’re Yankumi or Tomoyan-kun, can’t you do something about your get-up?” the class laughed at her expense.
“Aaa~” Hyuuga cut in, “I thought we could play around with the new teacher. So, we came prepared with a few things.”
“Prepared… what?” she asked naïvely, still smiling.
The whole class brought out bats, pipes, and hockey sticks from nowhere, and apparently, I hadn’t got the memo, so I continued to sit and stare.
“Ahh,” Tsucchi yelled out, “Look! She’s scared!”
“Oh? She’s gonna cry.” someone else added.
“Oh no,” Take stood up on his desk, holding his pipe firmly, “Help me, help me. I‘m so scared~” the whole class laughed as Yamaguchi looked as if she was actually going to cry. Tsucchi stood up, quieting the class.
“Well, don’t worry.” he said mockingly. “We won’t do something as cowardly as hitting women.” he went to sit down, still fanning himself.
“Doing something like this is pretty cowardly, you know.” Yamaguchi said in a quiet yet firm voice. I looked up at her immediately, suddenly amused with this small yet brave woman.
“What’d you say?” Tsucchi growled, pride hurt. He turned back to face her and yelled, “Don’t fool around!”
She stepped out in front of the podium, and quietly stated, “I’m serious.”
“Fine then.” Tsucchi growled at her. He began to walk towards her, and the class whooped and jeered, thinking he was going to punch her. I was suddenly afraid that he might. What if he hurts her? I thought for a split second, but I continued to sit.
The class began to chant. “Tsucchi, Tsucchi, Tsucchi, Tsucchi, Tsucchi, Tsucchi, Tsucchi.”
He’s gonna hit her. God, he’s gonna hit her. My heart began to pound, and, under my self-composed exterior, I was terrified inside. “Tsucchi!!!” I yelled, before I could even think about it, the words had left my mouth. “Stop it. It’s lame fighting against a female teacher.” I explained before he could try to convince me to change my mind, and before I could let out that I didn’t want her to get hurt.
“Alright.” Tsucchi said, walking away reluctantly. When he sat down, he whispered in my ear, “Why did you defend her?”
“I’m going to take attendance now~” she said loudly and quietly at the same time. She was always doing that. Somehow.
She started calling off the names, and when she got to my name, she changed how she did things. For everyone else, she said their name once. But for me…
“Yabuki Hayato-kun?” she asked for the third time. “Yabuki-kun?”
“Don’t call my name so many times!” I yelled, embarrassed. She smiled at me, and I blushed, quickly covering it up so Tsucchi, Take and Hyuuga couldn’t see. I saw her mumble something, but I couldn’t hear it, so I let it go.
She started putting these papers on everyone’s desks. “Uh, I would like everyone to write an essay today.”
Hyuuga butted in. “What boring stuff are you talking about?” he said.
“I want to learn lots of things about you guys.” she said, putting one paper on my desk. I thought about it and blushed a bit. But then I remembered I had to pretend like I hated her. “The topic is, ‘Memories of My High School Life’.”
“We don’t have any.” I said bluntly, not trying to be rude, but telling the truth.
She looked at me, surprised. “You must have at least one. About an after-school club or a school trip.”
“We’re telling you, we don’t have any.” Tsucchi retorted rudely.
She pursued on. “It can be about a happy event or a sad one.”
Take sighed. “We don’t have those either.”
“You must have something.” she said in disbelief. “There’s no way you don’t feel any--”
I had gotten tired of this conversation, because she was just going to get more rude comments. “We don’t feel anything.”
“…What?” she looked at me, shocked.
One of the guys in the class that I didn’t know that well yelled over at her, “It’s my policy to forget about everything bad that happens.”
Others began to say “Me too.” one by one.
She breathed in and smiled. “Okay then, what about, ‘My Dreams For The Future’?”
Hyuuga looked over at her. “My Dreams For The Future?” he asked, and she nodded.
Take stood on the desk, which was apparently his new thing, and said, “I want to be rich.”
Hyuuga joined him. “I wanna be a pimp.”
Somebody else stood up and said, “Well, then I want to be a bride!” and the whole class laughed, although I was too busy looking at Yamaguchi’s reaction.
Tsucchi ran up and yelled, “Well then, be my bride!” and they hugged. The whole class, including me this time, roared in laughter.
Yamaguchi seemed to be having fun, but she wanted us to work also. “Everyone, be quiet! Be quiet!” She yelled softly.
“You’re the one who’s loud!” Tsucchi roared at her.
Yamaguchi turned to glare at him. “Me?”
Tsucchi continued. “Be quiet. If you want us to pay attention to you, at least wear a miniskirt.” I tried not to picture her in a miniskirt.
I heard her mumble, “I don’t have one.” and held back a laugh.
Take stood up on the desk(once again), and said, “I don’t want to see that lame woman’s legs.”
The class erupted in shouts of, “I don’t either!” and “Sorry for asking.”. I tried to hold back my anger as best I could, as Yamaguchi seemed to be almost at her breaking point.
I saw her hand shaking, gripping the pen in it tightly. Suddenly the pen snapped, and I gasped.

When she left, Take, Hyuuga, Tsucchi and I began to play darts. I had won three times already, but Tsucchi wanted to continue, for his pride.
“Why don’t you just quit, Tsuchiya-kun?” I mocked, sounding pained.
“Yeah, like we’re gonna let Hayato win them all.” Hyuuga mumbled.
“Right, right, that’s not fair.” Take said.
“Yeah, but it’s a bit subtle.” Yamaguchi said. Everyone nodded their heads in agreement.
We all jumped, only just noticing she was there. “Eh?” and “Why?” was passed through our mouths.
“I have something to ask.” she said, stepping in front of Tsucchi who was already posed to throw the dart.
“Even so, don’t stand there!” Tsucchi retorted angrily.
“It’s about Odagiri-kun.” she said, and I felt my insides tighten. Ryu? I thought.
I stood up and walked away, sitting down just far away enough that I could hear what was being said, but nobody could see my reaction.
“What do you wanna know about Ryu?” Hyuuga inquired, obviously knowing that I wasn’t comfortable with the subject.
“I heard he stopped coming to this school because of the fight between him and Yabuki.” she stated. That’s what everyone thought. Nobody knew the real reason.
*flashback*
I sat in the empty park, swinging slowly, waiting for Ryu to show up. I had come about ten minutes early, just in case. Ryu was always early to everything. It was cold, I pulled the sweater’s arms over my already gloved hands, and my scarf up to my nose.
“You’re here early? That’s unusual.” I heard from above. I looked up to see a smirking Ryu sitting on the swing next to mine.
“Oh, hey.” I said quietly. Ryu leaned in.
“What’s wrong? You’re never like this.” he said, worried.
“Ryu, you’re my best friend, right?” I asked, hesitantly.
“Of course I am!” he laughed. “What is it?”
“…so you wouldn’t care about anything I would tell you, right?” I asked again, hesitantly.
He laughed. “What, did you kill someone? Wait-- Hayato, did you kill someone?” he asked, suddenly serious.
“No!”
“Then it’s probably fine.” Ryu chuckled. “Now what is it?”
I looked up at him. “Ryu, I think-- I think I like you.” I said quietly.
The silence that followed was deafening. The winter wind blew Ryu’s hair into his face, but he didn’t brush the red-orange locks away, he just sat there, shocked into silence.
“What do you mean, ‘you think’?” he asked.
“Ah, I just mean-- I’m not exactly sure about my feelings. That’s why--”
“I’m sorry, Hayato. I guess I just don’t feel the same way.” Ryu said suddenly, getting up and running away.
*end flashback*
That night, I sat on the swing for hours, until the sun came up and people started walking by. I can’t remember if I cried or not. That was horrible, and it was probably the main reason we got in a fight. Going through that was bad, but when Ryu betrayed us, that was just like a punch in the face after getting smashed with a pole in the balls.
“Why was he the only one punished?” Yamaguchi asked.
“It’s none of your business.” I said angrily.
She walked over to where I was sitting. “If your fight with him is the reason, aren’t you concerned?” she asked.
I chuckled. “Not really.”
“I don’t think you aren't.”
Hyuuga seemed to sense my irritation, because he stood up and said, "Things were settled between Ryu’s parents and the Superintendent, isn’t that good enough?”
“Aren’t you worried?” she asked. “Isn’t he your friend?”
That struck me. “Friend?” I asked.
“Yeah. Isn’t that right?” Yamaguchi asked.
Somebody said, “We were just in the same class, that doesn’t make us friends you know.”
This seemed to be really hard to understand, because Yamaguchi came back with, “But that was fate, right? Don’t you feel like treasuring that fate?”
I had held back my rude tone until now. “He’s not our friend.”
Yamaguchi turned back to me. “What?”
“No way he’s our friend.” I half whispered and stood up. I walked away, away from Yamaguchi, away from the people in the classroom, away from my memories of Ryu.
When we got to the bar, our hideout, I asked everyone to leave.
Take walked forward and put a hand on my shoulder. “Hayato, please--”
“Just go away!!” I yelled. Take gasped, and they all left, one by one, out the door. Away from me, who needed help more than ever.
But thinking like that would be selfish, now, wouldn’t it?
