Rant incoming!

When Monolithsoft's game Namco X Capcom was first announced in late 2004, I was immediately hooked on the idea. Being a longtime fan of the Super Robot Wars series and something of an advocate of crossover games in general, the thought of being able to play a game in which Taizo Hori of Dig Dug fame fought alongside Chun-Li had me excited as hell. I downloaded the patch a few months ago... it's better than nothing, but it is definitely underwhelming. And rather hard to read on my little TV screen. :/

I still need to make time to play through hard mode, though.

The only difference I found in hard mode was that you no longer had the option to use abilities or items before an attack, which only rarely made a difference for me.

I could see that maybe being a problem late in the game.

But I'd love an excuse to play through the game again, I really enjoyed it. On a side note, I need to make room for an LJ icon of Baby Commando. -_-

I don't think I've played anything by TransGen, so I can't speak for them personally, but overall I tend the vast majority of translation hacks underwhelming if they're not released by a very small collection of romhacking groups. Something by Giheon Zhi at AGTP means assured quality. Something by Unknown Schlubs Trying Their Hand at Translation Hacks generally means unfinished, sloppy, and often glitchy work. Like anything else, 99% of everything is crap, I guess.

Hopefully somebody competent will take it into their heads to do Namco x Capcom up right someday.

Honestly, what makes it all the more disheartening is the fact that just in August I played the fantastic Policenauts translation, which is like a Platonic ideal of fan translations.
