Let's Play: Paper Mario! part twelve

Aug 16, 2007 18:57

And so, with Pulse Stone in hand, Mario heads back into the desert to
find the fabled Dry Dry Ruins...

Soon, he encounters this mysterious rock all by its lonesome.

The Pulse Stone goes crazy as he approaches, so, taking a deep breath,
Mario puts it in the indentation and takes a step back...

The tremors are felt in Kolorado's camp...

And in Dry Dry Outpost...

Goombario: It's Dry Dry Ruins.
Weren't you totally blown away when it rose out of the sand?
That was awesome! I wish we could make it happen again!
Totally! I'd make a video of it if I could.

As Mario steps inside, his is greeted by an eerie voice...

I'm the huge, scary Tutankoopa! Remorseless king of the desert!
Who dares set foot in this, my palace of the sands?
Speak and be known!
Begone from this place! Now! Or disaster will befall you!

Of course, because this is a desert ruins, there are spooky sarcophagi.
And within them...

Pokey Mummies are Pokeys that dried out and became mummies then went to
live in the ruins.
Careful! They have spikes on their heads!
Trust me--it'll hurt if you jump on 'em.
The mummification also made 'em poisonous. If you get poisoned when they
attack you, you'll take damage for a while.
What do you say we beat 'em before they can poison us?

Power locks standard with all dungeons.

Hmm, a doorway that can't be reached...

A room filled with sand and a switch... Mario, unable to resist, jumps on
it.

A HA!

And of course, this dungeon is full of varations on this sort of puzzle.

Having cleared that puzzle, Mario once again hears the voice...

You will fall to my legions and become a mummy of the sands!

And speaking of legions.

Fire attacks don't work very well against these hardheads.
I'm sure that would be a problem if this were SMRPG.
If you can flip 'em, though, their defense power falls to 0.
Keep flipping 'em, Mario!
I heard that they used to flourish all over the place, but now they're
only found in dark, shadowy places.

Mario spies a strange sculpture behind another strange gray block. Perhaps
we'll luck out and find a way to destroy them soon.

And here's another switch-based puzzle, this time involving making the
stairs rotate 90 degrees and then climbing them to other areas.

Even Jump attacks can't reach 'em when they're hanging on the ceiling,
but earth tremors will knock 'em loose.
Parakarry can also knock 'em loose with one of his moves.
You can attack 'em however you choose once they're hovering in the air.
...Weren't they green once upon a time?

... Ooops. Ahem! I mean...
(In wavy text) Flee now while you still can!
If you continue...uh...you'll feel a horrible curse!

Oh dear, what a horrible curse. How shall Mario ever get past that block
to the delicious round chest beyond it?

Well, however he did it, it probably involved switches.

On top of that, you can now destroy Stone Blocks!
Yaaaaaaaaay!

A short distance later, Mario finds another Super Block, and decides to
upgrade Goombario.

Oh crap, Mario broke a stone block, and this thing came out!

I dunno, it looks more like a Bagan from Baraduke (shown below).

His jaws can supposedly crush a Coconut.
I don't know about you, but I don't want to become a snack.

After destroying the bejawed foe, mario takes the treasure it was
guarding:

Wow, a handy map of the dungeon, complete with a You Are Here marking!

This bears inclusion because it is a slightly different switch: Instead
of pouring sand, it extrudes a stairway from the wall, letting Mario
reach the key.

If you do not retreat, you'll be in grave trouble!
I do not lie!
You will regret it!

Hmm...

I wonder what this is for.

I'm sure you can guess how this works.

Whee! Mario hops on down the stairs.

Of course, Mario isn't much for heeding warnings, so he moves on.

Spooky!

...He's not quite as frightening anymore :\

(in normal text)Don't you have the common sense to get scared and run
away? What's wrong with you?
You shoulnd't mess with Tutankoopa, a faithful follower of King Bowser!
Ooops... I mean...
(wavy text again) You shall regret this!

BATTLE TIME!

Come, Chomp! Come!
Bite this intruder!

I've heard that he has sort of a pharaoh complex.
You think?
He attacks by throwing shells from that high perch.
Try to dodge when he uses magic: its attack power is 2 and it'll sting for
sure.
And he also summons Chomps, his loyal subjects.
Those Chomps have some serious attack power.
Think hard about who to attack first, Tutankoopa or Chomp.

They're made out of such hard stuff that most of your attacks won't even
faze them.
I heard a rumor that the Chomps are a little peeved at Tutankoopa because
he works them so hard.

I'm a magical genius!
Watch, and be amazed!
He casts a spell that summons a Chomp spirit to rain down debris... on
himself, knocking him to the ground. He recovers quickly, though.
Unfortunately, the combined might of Tutankoopa and the Chomp proves too
much for Mario, and he is knocked out. The world turns black around
him...

Will Mario recover and bring this foul Koopa to desert justice?
Will the Chomp eat his hat?
Will the tension hold out until the next update?
FIND OUT!
