Let's Play: Paper Mario! part seven

Aug 07, 2007 18:50

Sorry for the delay; I screwed up and kept pressing the wrong button
during my play yesterday and didn't realize it until this morning, so I
wound up having to start over from scratch; fortunately thanks to
frameskip it only took a couple hours to make it back to where I'd been.
But on the plus side, I've decided to switch to JPEGs from here on, so
that should make things faster for everyone.

As soon as Mario and Kooper return to Koopa Village, they notice a
suspicious, worm-like figure wearing a Willy Wonka hat...

If you can manage to answer my brain-busting questions correctly,
then...
Y... Yaa... Yaaaaaahooo!
I'll give you a Star Piece!
Want to try a quiz?
Mario, being no fool and eager to test his knowledge, agrees.

Quizmo asks him a question about Goombario's family, and he gets the
answer right, earning a Star Piece. Unfortunately, before any more
questions can be asked, Quizmo vanishes up his own hat (literally!), so
Mario goes to talk to the now-becalmed residents of Koopa Village.

To tell the truth, though, it's a bit boring here now.
Some people are just never happy. >:\

He hasn't been back here to his house since he went to Dry Dry Desert.
Mr. Kolorado's wife is always worrying about him.

They left, though, because they said it just wasn't exciting enough around
here.
I hear that's Garland's backstory, too.

He said something about needing something from you.
Mario and his cerulean-carapaced pal waste no time rushing to the old
turtle's home.

Say...might you do me a favor?
Mario, of course, agrees, being the sucker selfless hero he is.
Oh!!! How very kind of you! I guess the younger generation isn't so bad
after all.
Well then, young fella! I don't usually ask for favors, but...
Perhaps just one little one?
Could you borrow the book "Koopa Legends" from Kolorado?
I'm certain if you were to ask Kolorado's wife, she'd lend it.
If it isn't a trouble, please, go there as soon as possible.
You promise, young fella?
And so, off they go two houses down.

Mmmm...right, "Koopa Legends."
Yes, my husband owns that one.
Of course you can borrow it!
Don't let that old Koot work you too hard, OK, Mario?
He's known to do that. He's also a bit short-tempered.
Well, anyway.
Wait here for just a moment. I'll go poke around my husband's bookshelf.
She disappears into the back room for a moment, then returns.
Found it!
You're talking about this book, right?
It's all yours.
It was behind the bookshelf.

"Strange book," eh? How suspicious!

This is just what I needed!
Hee hee hee hee...
To show my gratitude, I'd like to make a gift of this.
Oh,
you don't have to be so polite, young fella.
Take this.

Don't spend it all on Moon Pies, young man!
But, Koopa Koot isn't finished with the plumber yet!
lately I've been sleeping poorly.
I'd love a Sleepy Sheep to help me catch a little shut-eye.
There should be a shop in Toad Town that sells 'em.
If it isn't a bother, hurry up and get one, all right?
You promise, young fella?
Luckily, Mario already has one in his inventory, which he gladly hands
over.
My stars!
You're a veritable hero, Mario!
Finally, some peace and quiet!
Sweet dreams, here I come!
Hee hee hee hee...
Why do I suspect that the book about shells will be involved in said
dreams?
He gives Mario another single coin, but then...
Oh, of course! Take this, too!
Did you know that there's a Playroom in Toad Town?
If I remember right, it used to be around the station.
It's strictly for members only, so the entrance to it is well hidden.
I bet you could find it, though.
This here's a Silver Credit. It'll let you play once you're inside the
Playroom.
Back in my heyday I used to go there and make a lot of money. But I got
tired of the hoopla. So the Silver Credit's yours.
Good luck! Make some money!
Hee hee hee.....

And with that, he tells Mario that he doesn't have any more jobs for
him... for now. *cute musical sting*

Having done all he can in Koopa Village for now, Mario and his new
bestest bud head to Koopa Bros. Fortress. Reaching the dead end that
stopped his progress last time, Mario peers across the creek and spies a
switch, which Kooper cheerfully sets off for him.

And if you act now, you too can get an instant bridge kit for just 30 easy
payments of $49.99 + 9.99 S&H!

Just a bit beyond the bridge, they come to the Fortress itself:

Mario approaches the door, and...

Woah! Mario!! What the...!
Oh, we're in a world of hurt! Mario's here already!
I gotta tell the leader!
Red Kooooooopaaaa!!!
He skedaddles back into the fortress, slamming the door shut behind him.
Mario enters after, and almost immediately encounters a new enemy!

Bob-ombs are pretty temperamental,
and they get steaming mad when you attack 'em.
You'd better not jump on 'em when they're angry or they'll blow up in
your face.
In fact, stay away entirely.
Attack 'em from a distance with items like Hammers.
or you could send in other things, like shells.
If they attack when angry, they'll charge in and explode. So you'd better
take care of them before they blow!
Beating these guys yields...

A key! And suspiciously close to a locked door! Huzzah!

A cracked wall too high to reach? Hmm...

And on the opposite side of that crack, Green Koopa planting evidence or
something. He barks an order to the Troopa, who brings down an iron
porticullis.
Green Koopa: Let's see the great Mario get through this!
Of course, who should show up right then but...

Um... It looks like there might be some fighting here.
How exciting! See ya!
Something tells me these Koopa Bros. might not be as tough as they make
themselves out to be. Anyway, the Troopa and his buddies attack, but
Mario makes short work of them.

Stairs? Let's see what's up them!

Apparently not much. Mario goes back down, beats up an enemy, and...

Thank you, convenient switch! Now, what's going on in the basement of
this joint?

Thanks for the tip-off, Goombario.

They head in the other direction, and fall prey to a corridor with a
sense of humor:

The moment they step through the doorway, it jumps up beyond Mario's
reach, forcing him to fight more enemies!

When you jump on 'em or use a POW Block, their wings fall off and they
become normal Koopa Troopas.
It's easy to beat 'em once they're normal Koopa Troopas. Give 'em another
Jump attack!
They think that they're pretty cool because they wear sunglasses, but
they're not that tough.
With these bozos out of the way, the doorways quit fooling around and let
Mario through... and into more deadly peril!

Somebody said there's a way to destroy 'em. How do you think we do
that?
Good question. Any of you guys out there got a clue?

Beyond the fire bars is the key our plumber friend has been looking for,
which unlocks the door to the next area, where Yellow Koopa is busily
preparing another trap.

!
Woah!
Looks like Mario's here!
He zooms off as the oblivious Mario enters the spiralng chamber. Our
hero pauses to take a breather outside before taking the ramp up, and
spots something:

With no way to get there, he heads up to the blindingly obvious trap and
falls for it.

Ah, that never gets old.
Yellow Koopa pops in again, shouts "Ha! They fell for it!" and leaves
again.

Mario and Kooper quickly right themselves and speak to the pink Bob-omb.
Pink Bob-omb: Oh...
I wondered what just fell, but...aren't you...Mario?
I never in a million years thought I'd meet such a famous guy in a place
like this.
...Who, me?
My name's Bombette. In case you hadn't noticed, I'm a Bob-omb.
Pleased to meet you!
The introductions out of the way, Mario goes to talk to the other Bob-ombs
in the cell.

Nobody's life should be all work, right?
I need free time to make my mark in the world. BOOM!
They violate the laws of nature to force increased productivity! EEEVIL!
Other Green Bob-omb: Oh, how long do we have to be locked up
here...?
I'm losing hope...
And I'm so hungry...
So sad...and mad...angry...
...I'm filling with rage!
I'm really angry now!
I want out! OUT! Right now, you hear me, Koopas!
What the heck do Bob-ombs eat? Do they mix gunpowder with water and ice
cubes and make a sort of gelatin with it?
Blue Bob-omb: I'm sorry, I simply will not obey tyrants anymore!
Those Koopa Bros. can't squash the pride of a Bob-omb!
So...
I'm using all my energy thinking of a way to break out of here.
Hmmmm...
The angles...vectors...
ooooooog...
It's so complicated... My head's going to explode!
We have drugs to control that.
Purple Bob-omb: The Koopa Bros. used to be cool, but they got
conceited because Kammy Koopa likes them.
Before, they were just typical young guys from Koopa Village. They were
nice enough.
I think maybe the desire for adventure corrupted them.
This is a sadly common and tragic occurance among adventurers. Some turn
to evil to feed their habits, others wind up squandering their vast
fortunes and end up destitute. The other day, I saw Thundarr sitting on
a street corner wearing a "will rescue damsels for food" sign around his
neck...

At least to these guys... Those uncouth Koopa Bros.!
I was just one of many Bob-ombs working here.
But those Koopa Bros.... Once Bowser took over, they started working us
into the ground!
I couldn't take it anymore, so I exploded next to them.
Yeah, that was a mistake. The Koopa Bros. didn't like it. So they locked
me in here.
And then they locked up the rest of the Bob-ombs because they thought
they might rise up.
You know, a Bob-omb rebellion! What do you think about that?
"Hell no, we won't not blow!"
...Oh, sorry...
It's a long story, I know.
Anyway, Mario,
we want to get out of here.
Do you think you could help spring us from this place or what? Pretty
please?
If you help us...
I promise I'll return the favor.
Mario says yes, figuring what could go wrong with allowing a group of
disgruntled explosives to run free.
Oh, how nice!<3
We'll be good friends from now on, I can feel it!
We'll make a super team, Mario!

Oh, gee, I almost forgot!
I haven't even told you about what I can do. Silly me!
My specialty is exploding. Check this out.
After stating the blatantly obvious (as well as repeating what the game
just told us), she walks over to the crack in the cell wall.
See, if there are any cracks in a wall, I can probably break it.
Let me try this one.
Puff, puff, puff... Take cover!

Fortunately, Bombette is a self-recycling Bob-omb, so she can explode over
and over again.

...?
Oh! An escape route!
Well, I...
I guess I never thought about doing that before...
I was so mad, I just blew up over and over in one place!
Tee hee!
OK, that was a little silly!
Well, anyway,
we can get out now, right?
And so can everyone else!
Thank you, Mario!
From now on I'll tag along and help out wherever I can!
You just ask, and I'll be there for you!<3
Now enough chitchat!
I have a little score to settle with those Koopa Bros.!

Mario and Bombette walk out of the cell and reckon they're home free,
when...

I believe what we have here is failure to communicate!
In case you Bob-ombs forgot, exploding is prohibited inside the
fortress except in case of emergencies!
What in the...Mario!?
What're you doing here?
Nothign good, I bet!
Everybody, get him!
Mario owns the chumps, blows some shit up, gets a key, and makes his way
to a puzzle room.

He gets through it with no trouble, and comes across a repeat of the
staircase/switch scenario from earlier.
This one, however, leads to a familiar part of the fortress:

Able to bomb the cracked wall and retrieve the key from behind it, he does
so and decides to leg it back to Koopa Village to rest and resupply
himself with mushrooms.

Here's Mario's stats as of this update:

And now, again, it's time to vote on Mario's badges!
This time, he has the same amount of BP (6), but over twice as many
badges as last time! Here they are:

Power Jump: 1 BP. Lets you do a Power Jump.
Power Bounce: 2 BP. Jumps on one enemy continuously until you miss an
action command.
Hammer Throw: 2 BP. Lets you do a Hammer Throw.
HP Plus: 3 BP. Increases maximum HP by 5.
FP Plus: 3 BP. Increases maximum FP by 5.
Close Call: 1 BP. When Mario's in danger, enemies sometimes fail to
attack.
Refund: 1 BP. Refunds some coins if you use an item in battle.
Dizzy Attack: 2 BP. Delivers a blow that makes an enemy dizzy and unable
to move.*
Attack FX B: 0 BP. Changes the sound effects when Mario's attacking.

*I'm not sure how or even if Dizzy Attack works, it doesn't seem to add
anything to Mario's jumps or hammer blows.

EDIT: More votes! I needs more votes!
