Very odd dream I had last night...

I have no idea what inspired this dream, or what it could mean, and I'm not sure I want to know the latter.
The dream began with me on a space station orbiting Earth or Mars (I'm not sure which), watching the stars through a window. I noticed something glowing near the sun, in an elongated shape. Within moments, it revealed itself to be a massive creature, looking something like a cross between a gray whale and the shark Custos from SRW Alpha. The creature appeared to be roughly twice as long as Jupiter, and began to absorb energy from the sun, which set people panicking, thinking it was going to drain all of the sun's power.
Soon, I was back on Earth, and the "whale" had moved into an orbit around Earth, and getting closer by the hour. It also seemed to be shrinking, although this did nothing to dissuade the millions of doomsayers, who believed that it would crash into a major city and set off a chain reaction that would lead to the extinction of humanity.
Eventually, it landed in the Pacific Ocean, having by that time shrunk to the size of an aircraft carrier, which provoked reactions along the lines of "Oh, we knew this was going to happen the entire time." I seemed to be the only one who thought that the situation, and everyone's sudden change in reaction, was in any way unusual. It spent several weeks swimming the oceans, or more accurately, floating on the ocean's surface, since it seemed to lack the ability to submerge completely. Then, one day, it seemingly disappeared and the media forgot about it, though I was still concerned. Taking a trip along the west coast, I found it beached on a shore somewhere in northern California, now shrunk to merely twice the size of a blue whale. It looked at me sadly as I walked down to it, and I wanted to try to talk to it... But unfortunately, I woke up at that point.

There was also a subplot along the way about working in a convenience store with an asian guy, but that didn't really go anywhere apart from setting up scenes in which I witnessed the media frenzy and the chaos caused by the imminent destruction of all life on earth.
