I'm taking a break from packing and sorting out things to give away/sell. Right now, I'm working on books. Most of the books I'm getting rid of are old college textbooks that I squirreled away from department giveaways while I was at work. I've finally come to terms with the fact that I'm never even going to pick the majority of the science texts up with any interest. I also doubt I'm ever going to teach myself any more French than what I can gather from my foreign language dictionary collection (which has been used quite extensively, I might add). I've also decided that a random German novel without a cover and some random pages missing really does destine it for the recycling bin and not, as I had previously hoped, my bookshelf. Ancient (read: seven-year-old) computer science books have finally been tossed aside now that I've finally reconciled with myself that they really are useless now (as is the Modern Chemistry book from the 1930s). My US History for Schools from before 1950 (likely before WWII) and my Medical Terminology books finally looked like what they should look like: old baggage that I have no use for but someone else might want. They were snatched up by my married friends, a historian and a nurse.
Other things I'm not quite sure why I kept:
-A torn air-flap from a walk-in food cooler
-A dozen, individually-wrapped plastic sporks (maybe more...)
-Random bits of string used to tie bunches of linen aprons together (okay, so I like playing cat's cradle). I should also include here some loose drawstrings and old shoelaces. Yay, string!
-Two copies of the Star Trek internet service CD (that's right! Star Trek themed internet service!) Never used 'em.
-Various cake decorations snatched from cupcakes over the years (plastic frogs and ghosts and such).
-Random pine cones, buckeyes and chestnuts
I've got much more to go through, yet...
