Exams and various assignments for comparative literature courses have kept me extremely busy lately so I'll just write down a few quick observations about stuff.

Looks like tGA is getting revived again. You can colour me surprised that I've seen people from the past, including Dark Messenger and Ashi, popping up. And it looks like DM is willing to RP even after all these years. Talk about dedication!

I finally finished watching various Uncharted 2, Metal Gear Solid, God of War 3, Resident Evil 5, and Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep vids. They're interesting both graphically and story-wise. I'm going to write more about them later.

I went to see How to Train Your Dragon and listened to the score and oh boy was I positively surprised. John Powell's music kicks ass in a way I haven't really heard since his Happy Feet and Kung Fu Panda scores, and I consider that a good thing. Complex orchestration, great use of orchestra, synths, electric guitar, Scottish instruments and epic choir, and a wonderful collection of kickass and beautiful themes (my favourites being the main theme, flight theme and love theme, although the menace theme, the friendship theme, the viking theme and the mystery theme are quite cool too). What surprised me the most, however, was how full of life the score (and the film) ended up being! The raw power, the joy of love and friendship, the sense of swashbuckling adventure and the tragic tones of death and near death experiences... it's overwhelming and almost transcendental in its beauty, and the animation is perhaps even more gorgeous than in the already impressive Kung Fu Panda. And that's saying a lot.

Although it's a difficult pick, I think the best scene to summarize the film musically, emotionally and in a cinematographic way is the gorgeous flight scene where Toothless and Hiccup finally bond for real and which has the stunning and memorable "Test Drive" track playing (which blasts out the flight theme in all its glory). It sounds great but it gets even more awesome when you see the frickin' scene on a big silver screen. Holy moly what an awesome blend of music and cinematography. I'd also like to mention the nighttime flight during which the love theme appears with gorgeous choral backing and use of violins as the track "Romantic Flight" plays. And yes, that scene change into the night sky looked very, very pretty with a lovely Dreamworks tribute added in. If only these scenes had lasted a little while longer...

I really need to write a proper review of this film and the score when I have the time. I know it's definitely among my top Dreamworks films and I hope they'll continue popping out such quality films as this and Kung Fu Panda in the future too. Gosh darn it, John Powell, you've written a 5 star film score at long last! ^_^

That's it for now.

Yours,
Mikko
