I'll discuss two things.
Firstly,
I finally posted a tGA invitation thread at EoFF, so don't be surprised if you'll be seeing new faces appearing at tGA in the coming weeks. Also, Lynx was kind enough to provide a finished 1.0 version of the world map, so I posted a World Map thread at tGA and put the map there. Big thanks to Lynx: I know this must've been bugging him for quite some time, so I'm grateful that he managed to get it done. I owe you one. =)
Secondly, the Academy Awards. There were some surprises and some guesses that came true. For example, it wasn't that surprising to see Juno win the award for best original script or Ratatouille win the award for best animated film after all the buzz that's been going on, but it was surprising that NONE of Alan Menken's songs won the Oscar. Sure, the song that actually won the award was alright and I could see the reasoning behind the award, but it was still rather cruel of the Academy to nominate three of Menken's songs from Enchanted and let none of them win. They should've just stabbed Menken inst if they wanted to play with his emotions. Poor Menken was quite disappointed that he didn't win.
The songs from Enchanted were performed well. Although Amy Adams's "Happy Working Song" suffered a bit from her nervousness, it went fine. "That's How You Know" was quite epic, and the woman singing it instead of Amy Adams was quite alright albeit a bit too quiet. "So Close" was very romantic, and a woman resembling Amy Adams danced there (too bad Patrick Dempsey only announced the song and didn't dance with her). It was nice to see Menken clapping his hands like crazy after Adams's performance in "Happy Working Song": he really seemed to enjoy it.
As for the other nominees, I doubt I'll have to discuss them that much because there are already so many talks about how, for example, There Will Be Blood should've had more Awards (although it was great that Daniel Day-Lewis had the award for best actor). I was also glad that Dario Marianelli won the award for best original score for Atonement, although Giacchino's Ratatouille might've been more deserving of that award. Nevertheless, I hope this gives Marianelli more publicity so that he really gets going, because he certainly has talent.
That's it for the time being.
Yours,
Mikko
