I went to the physics colloquium at Pomona today. The topic was "Gravitational Waves from Nascent Black Hole." (hmm.. what the heck is it?) Well, I didn't get what on earth the speaker was talking about. It's literally as though he's talking in a different language; which is actually true. (hyper-accreting black hole? failure of neutrino-powered supernova explosion? relativistic disk dynamics?) Probably around 1% of it. Good enough. The audience was mostly professors, so I really shouldn't expect to get much out of it. Anyway, looking from the positive side, it's interesting to see how it's like and to hear about new terms. There will be another one next week on quantum computation, which I really want to go. (Although I suppose I wouldn't get very much from it either. oh, who cares?)
