When I fixed the armscye the other day, all I did was look at the pattern, trace it, and eyeball where I needed more fabric. I tried it on and it seemed good without the stays. Trying it on with the stays today, I was right. I find it rather amazing--and stopped thinking it was luck some time ago--that you can adjust a pattern like that. I guess after doing this for so long, you just get a feel for where things need to be. Still, it seems quite weird and I don't really trust it until the dress itself is done :)
