Aiba was the boy in the village that made the girls sigh dreamily when he walked by. He was kind, and friendly, and shy if caught him doing something embarrassing.

Sho sighed too, though it came out more as a longing whimper, and he tried to never do it when actually in Aiba’s presence.

Even though they had been friends since childhood, something had changed recently.  Sho had fallen very, very in love. He couldn’t even remember how or when, just that now Aiba made his heart have minor attacks whenever he smiled.

He didn’t dare confess. Sho wasn’t sure if he’d be able to survive the rejection that would surely follow.

There was only one thing for Sho to do.

Seek magical help.

He waited until nightfall, when all of the produce and blacksmith shops in the market plaza closed, and when all of the potion shops, and spell stores opened.

He snuck among the shadows, hoping he wouldn’t be seen among the farmers looking for spells to ward off crop fungi, and old ladies looking for youth potions.  He didn’t want to be seen shopping for magic for personal use; it was too embarrassing.

He arrived at the shop without incident.  A sign infused with magic glowed in the window, reading ‘Love Elixirs.’ It caught Sho’s eye, and he looked closer, noticing a subtitle ‘for the desperate.’

The old wooden door creaked as he let himself inside.

“Hello?” Sho called, and two men appeared from behind a curtain behind a long counter just next to the door.

The shorter one with a mole on his chin grinned and opened his arms widely. “Welcome~ Welcome~ Welcome~”

“Do you have to say it like that every time?” Grunted the taller one, a mole on his upper lip instead.

“Shut up, J. It’s my shop, I’ll great customers, how I want.”

“It’s our shop. And it’s getting annoying.”

“Don’t mind my partner, he was born an ass. Fortunately magic these days can help him take the form of a normal human.”

The tall one hit the shorter one on the head. Hard.

“J, what the fuc-“

“How can we help you sir?”

“Um, I need a…a potion.”

“Is this your first time seeking magic?” The tall one asked kindly.

“Well my mom used to use stain removing potions-“

“Those are one of our best sellers.” Said the smaller one, proudly in the air of a creator turned salesman. “I have made quite a
laundry line up. My newest one will literally knock your socks off, wash them, dry them, and then hop back on your feet.”

“Although that sounds amazing, that isn’t exactly what I had in mind….”

They stared at him expectantly.

Sho swallowed hard, and forced himself to say it. “I’m looking for something that will take the edge off a crush.”

The shop owners blinked in strange unison.

“Let me get this straight. You don’t want to forget about this person…”

“And you don’t want them to fall madly, desperately in love with you…”

“I just want to cool myself down a little so I can take it slow and not screw up a lifelong friendship.”

The shop owners looked at each other again.

“I think it’s going to be a custom job. J, grab my powder set from under the counter.”

The taller one opened a cabinet and produced a wooden box filled with clear jars of uniform size but each holding a different colored powder. The shorter one had disappeared behind the curtain only to return with a clean vial and a ring of different sized silver  measuring spoons.

“We will need to ask you some personal questions in order to make the potion for you. Please rest assured that Nino’s potions are strong and successful, despite how grating his personality might be.”

“That is reassuring.” Sho smiled weakly.

As ‘Nino’ uncapped the jars of powders, the other grabbed a book from a bookshelf above the register, and turned to a page marked by a goose feather.

“Moon of birth?”

“My mom told me it was a waxing crescent.”

Nino searched his jars, found the one he was looking for, and put a spoon full of red powder in the empty jar in his hand.

“Moon of your love interest’s birth?”

“How am I supposed to know that?”

“That’s fine. What are three good qualities about yourself?”

“I’m kind, generous, and have a good sense of humor.”

Nino scooped from three more jars, a yellow, a green and a dark purple.

“Your worst qualities?”

“Uh… I like to work too much…I like to eat too much….and I’m not good with sports.”

Three more powders were added.

“Are you a virgin?”

“E-excuse me?!”

“It’s nothing to be embarrassed about.” Said Nino, as he added a white powder.

“Why are you adding something! I didn’t say I was.”

“You didn’t have to. And it isn’t a good idea to talk to Nino while he’s Mixing. Now, the next question. Is this your first crush?”

“No.”

“How many others have there been?”

“Just one.”

“Did the first crush end up in a relationship that you both recognized?”

“…no.”

“How many times to you masturbate in a Moon?”

“What?!”

“J, did we classify the ‘What?!’ response as a 20, or a 21?”

“21. 20 is ‘What?’”

“That’s what makes it difficult to remember.” Nino measured out a large spoon worth of pink powder. “Alright, she’s full. Now you’ll
want to give this to him in the next couple of days, or else the magic will go flat.”

A cork cap was pressed into the bottle.

Sho took the bottle and stared at the beautiful rainbow of powders before looking up again. “Give it to him? But I wanted the magic for me.”

“It doesn’t work that way.” Nino started pressing caps back into the jars. “You have to treat the cause not the symptoms. After he takes this, he will seem less attractive to you. The potion itself is ephemeral, so you don’t need to worry about messing up your chances in the long run.”

“So what do I do with this? Slip it in his food? Pour it on his head?”

J rummaged under the register again, and produced a sheet of stickers. He removed one that read ‘Rainbow Lemonade Mix’ and gave it to Sho to put on the jar. “I suggest giving it to him as a gift. Put a bow on it. Make it look nice.”

“Thanks. I hope it works.”

“You don’t need to hope. It will work.” Nino put the box of jars back under the counter, and smiled as he stood up. “You do need to pay though. Five gold pieces, please.”

The next morning Sho knocked on Aiba’s door.

“Sho! Good morning!” Aiba’s smile was wide and bright.

Sho clapped a hand over his mouth to muffle his whimper. He passed it off as a cough, and clearing his throat, smiled weakly.

“Good morning.”

“It’s been Moons! How are you? Want to come in and have breakfast?”

“I’m…I’m good thanks. I’m sorry I’ve been too busy to meet you lately.”

“It’s ok! I know you’re busy and all. It’s tough being an adult.”

“Y-yeah….anyway, I have something for you. My..uh…neighbor made it, but I remembered how much you liked uh…lemonade so…” Sho held out the jar of powders.

“Oh wow, Sho! Thank you so much! Are you sure you don’t want to have some with me over breakfast?”

“I sure. Very sure. Anyway, I’ll be off.”

“Ok, let’s have dinner sometime soon-Ah, oh! Wait! I forgot!” Aiba ran back into the house. Sho waited, already feeling guilty for having behaved so surreptitiously.

Aiba returned, with a paper bag. “These are chocolates my…uh…aunt made. She gave me too many though, so I want you to have them.”

Sho was touched.  Aiba had never given him anything before. “Are you sure? If your aunt made them, is it ok just to give them to me?”

“Yeah, I’m sure. Very sure. Eat them soon though, or they might go bad.”

“Thanks, I will!”

Aiba waved goodbye and closed the door. Sho walked home, munching on the chocolates.

When he got home, Sho began to feel a little strange.

He couldn’t stop thinking about Aiba.

It must have been the potion. Knowing that the next time he saw Aiba, he wouldn’t experience the butterflies of love made him think of Aiba all the more.

He kept thinking about the way Aiba smiled. The way he moved.

How he would look naked.

“AH.” Sho yelped, covering his mouth but fearing to close his eyes in case he saw naked Aiba again.

But he had to blink sometime.

“AH!!”

There was a knock at the door, and Sho ran to answer it, anything to get his mind off what it was doing to Aiba.

But it was Aiba at the door. Looking worried, and sad.

And suddenly, it was like a rain cloud was pouring rain over Sho’s head. The passion and desire that had filled him a moment ago had been smothered by a dense, impenetrable fog. Far from making Sho feel better, he felt cold and empty and sick and shaken, the same way a person does after vomiting nonstop for three days. Like there was nothing left to do but wait to die.

“Um, Sho, I know we just saw each other, but do you have some free time this morning….”

Sho found that when he didn’t look directly at Aiba, he felt slightly better. “I’m sorry, I’m actually busy…”

“Oh ok, nevermind then. Sorry to bother you.”

“Sorry. Bye.”

As soon as Aiba’s back was turned, Sho quickly closed the door.

The fog evaporated.

It was like a breath of fresh air.

It was like Aiba breathing in his ear.

Panting. Moaning Sho’s name.

Sweet kisses. Carnal kisses.

Sticky, sticky flesh.

Sho ripped the door open. “Aiba! Aiba wait!”

Aiba hadn’t made it more than a few steps onto the road. He turned when called.

Sho ran into the fog of gloom like a brick wall. He crumpled to his knees.

“Sho?! Sho are you ok?”

“I…don’t think so. I think…I think it might be magic poisoning.”

“Oh no! What should I do?!”

“G-go to that magic shop in the market.  The one with the love potion sign.”

“Ok, I’ll go. First let me help you back into the house.”

“N-no, please…go now.”

“Ok, I’m going!” Aiba ran.

The instant he was out of sight, the fog was gone.

Sho hurried inside before the images of Aiba in his mind became a public display of arousal.

“Nino! Nino!” Aiba banged on the door to the magic shop. “Matsujun! Matsujun!”

A sleepy Jun opened the door. “Aiba? You know we’re only open after dark.”

“I know but…you know how I was here to get Horny Chocolates from you guys to get this guy to like me?”

“Yeah?”

“I think it gave him magic poisoning!”

“You can’t get magic poisoning from Horny Chocolates. They aren't that strong by themselves. He probably just has an upset stomach because he ate them too fast or something.” Jun said, too tired to be anything but blunt.

“No no, he’s really sick, Matsujun! He fell on the ground, and was acting really strange! Please, come and help him!”

Jun frowned, “Have you had any magic today?”

“None that I know of. For breakfast I just had normal eggs and bacon. Oh, and a glass of some fancy lemonade Sho gave me.”

“….what kind of lemonade?”

“He said it was rainbow lemonade that his neighbor or someone made.”

“…It could be magic poisoning then. When two different magics interact, sometimes their potency dramatically increases."

"Will he be ok?"

"Of course. Nino will kill me for not charging you for these, but given how I’ve had to put up having to hear his testing stronger Horny Chocolates with his boyfriend every morning after we close, he’s lucky I don’t do worse.” Jun left Aiba at the door and went to a shelf behind the counter, where he found a bottle with clear pills inside. He tapped two out, and put them into an envelope. “You take one now, and give one to him as soon as possible. It’ll be like nothing ever happened. Except it did. And you’ll both remember everything.”

“….do you have something that will make him forget-?”

“Aiba. Get out.”

Aiba pounded on Sho’s door. “Sho? Sho are you ok?”

Sho’s voice came, a little higher than normal. “Aiba? Did you get help?”

“Yeah! I have a pill for you to take! Let me in!”

“C-can you slide it under the door?”

It was a close squeeze, but Aiba was able to push the paper envelope through. “Just take it by mouth. Jun says it’ll clear you right up.”

After a minute, Sho opened the door. He was sweaty, and shirtless and his hair was a mess, even though he looked neatly groomed when Aiba had left.

The air was very awkward.

“Um, Sho, I-“

“No. Its my fault. I’m sorry. I tried to use magic on you so you’d be less attractive so I wouldn’t screw things up and confess to you before I was ready to be rejected.”

“Sho…”Aiba breathed, “Did you take that pill?”

“Yeah. I feel better now. Back to normal.”

“You’re saying this all by yourself?”

“Yeah…” Sho shook his head, ruffling his hair. “But I’d rather just be rejected than resort to magic.”

“What makes you think I’ll reject you?” Aiba asked, swallowing hard.

“Why wouldn’t you?” Sho laughed, sadly.

Aiba grinned, and folded his arms defiantly, “Why would I reject the guy I gave Horny Chocolates to?”

“Those….were…”

“Yep.”

“Oh.” Sho cleared his throat and adjusted his pants. “That explains a lot.”

“Sorry I didn’t tell you about them.” Aiba said, blushing too. “I thought they would make you like me.”

“Oh they did.” Sho rubbed his face in his hands. “A lot.” His hands slowly came down. “You wanted to make me like you?”

“Yeah.”

“But I already liked you.”

“Well I already liked you too.”

“So…we already liked each other.”

Aiba thought back. It was all becoming very confusing. “Yes, I suppose so.”

“So…all of that magic was pointless.”

“Well, it made us confess.” Aiba observed. “And if we do something about it then it won’t be pointless.”

“We should definitely do something about it.”

Sho was entirely too nervous and scared to have dinner with Aiba. He was afraid of screwing it up, of things not going right, of Aiba changing his mind about his feelings in the end.

There was only one thing to do.

Seek magical assistance.
