A modest proposal - Part I

Feb 25, 2011 16:54

I spend a large portion of my time on this blog talking about political topics, and this is the start of a set of postings that I hope can define a different way of looking at broad political issues of our time.  Some of this material is new, and some is re-cycled from previous posting (sorry to bore y'all).

I self-identify as a Fiscal conservative and Social progressive, which really tells you that I am for the most part middle of the road.  Weirdly in many ways I appear more as a conservative than as a progressive, and yet I see the ideas I am most comfortable with as being moderate answers to complex issues that are, for the most part, polarizing on the American political stage.  I reject the rhetoric from both sides of the political spectrum, and in fact think that many political figures have forgotten that public service means service to the society as a whole, not just to the folks that have money.

John Kennedy and his call to public service rings very true in my head even these many years later.  What I believe is that he was correct, the greatest act of patriotism is to enter the arena of public service and by doing so try to make better this society.  I am very sad to realize that since his call for public service was spoken there are elements in our society who have demonized that call, and that they continue to do so is an act that falls short of traitorous only by inches.

The issues that I choose here, are the ones that seem to dominate the news in this country, and in many cases represent the deepest divides in our political culture.  I am not perfect, but I am looking to solve problems not score points off of any political segment of our country.  Feel free to comment, keep it polite though, and if you have an idea you want to add, please do.  If you have an issue that you think we need to discuss please let me know.

Peace out y'all!
