It still didn’t feel real to him. Marco watched the sun set in the distance, staining the sky a mixture of fiery reds and oranges among the cerulean and midnight blues. He was leaning against the wooden railing enjoying the feel of nostalgia when one of the crew approached him.
“Captain, the cook wishes you to know that dinner is ready,” the pirate told him, and Marco only nodded before heading below deck to fulfill his nightly routine.

“It makes sense though,” came the reply to an unvoiced question as Marco let himself into his quarters. He set the tray on the table pulled up beside the bunk, surveying the fare the cook had devised for this night’s meal.
“You’re the smartest, most sensible, calm, and probably strongest of the Whitebeard pirates besides Pops himself. It’s a no-brainer that you’d become our captain in his stead.” After a moment, almost as an afterthought, Ace smirked up at the other pirate, “…not to mention the sexiest.”
“Good to know that part of you wasn’t damaged,” Marco replied, helping the wounded pirate sit up.
“It takes more than a magma-dog’s fist through my gut to hurt my libido.”
Marco couldn’t help but snort a laugh. Leave it to Ace to stand at the cusp of death for nearly a month then make jokes about his sexual prowess once he was lucid. As he shifted a pillow behind Ace’s back to prop him up, he assessed his condition. His skin was loosing that gray pallor, his flesh no longer burning with the strange fever that had plagued him since they had dragged his broken body to one of the ships that could still sail. For the first couple of weeks, everyone was certain Ace would die; the injuries were immense. But by some god’s power he’d pulled through, that gaping wound in his gut starting to heal.
“Oi,” Ace poked his arm softly. Marco blinked at him, bringing his mind back from remembering those days spent sitting at Ace’s bedside with Luffy, both captains praying to whatever would hear them to please not take Ace from them, they loved him.
“Are you going to feed me or what?”
