Diamond Sea
Famous Lovers
super/Heater
@ Barfly
The stories were true. Barfly = cramped as hell. But that hardly mattered. The heat didn't matter much either.
First off, Diamond Sea and Famous Lovers. Honestly, if I didn't have a lift home I wouldn't have stuck around for these bands. However, I'm glad I was able to, because I was suprisingly entertained. I was listening to Famous Lovers during their sound check and I was dreading sitting through their performance. It was a bit too synth-y and cheesy for my tastes. Oddly, listening to them during their performance, I was mildy entertained. Diamond Sea I enjoyed a fair bit more. Their sound was just doing it for me a fair bit more and on the whole I found them to be better musically. They gotta work on their singing, but nobody's perfect.
Of course, my whole reason for being there was super/Heater. Some might say that it's easy to like your friends band. Perhaps that is true, but there was definately more to it then that tonight. It helps that I genuinely love their songs. The fusion of rock and doom and experiments with noise reminiscent of Boris and is something I'm really into right now. But tonight they played with such enthusiasm and creativity that it was impossible not to be entertained. The type of music they play requires a lot of energy be put into it, and they delivered. I think that one of the really great things about super/Heater's performance is that they understand a good show isn't about showing off or guitar wankery but just putting so much life and power into your music while you play that it just kicks ass. Well done, super/Heater. I look forward to your next show.
The other cool thing about the evening was the number of people I was able to get to come out. Six! I was shocked. Honestly, I don't know waht I did right, but I hope I can do it again. I usually don't have this kind of success getting people to come to concerts. Last time I only managed to convince one dude to tag along. I was glad to see that everyone enjoyed themselves too. My friend Melissa was blown away, I don't think I've ever seen her so genuinely impressed. Thanks again to all of you who came out. And to those of you who didn't, you're all gonna be coming to the next one. Indeed.
On a final note, this is the first concert in I can't remember how long that I actually watched from beginning to end. Last one might have been Strapping Young Lad with opening acts Devin Townsend Band and Zimmer's Hole, like 2 years ago. Maybe it had to do with the fact that I wanted to see the first band of the night and my lift home wanted to stay for the entire show. Might have been more, because I didn't find myelf minding. I remember recent concerts where I just couldn't wait to see the band I wanted to see and get the fuck out. This was different though, I didn't mind sitting through bands I had no great desire to see in the first place. Perhaps my patience for metal has run dry. Which is not to say it's not still my favourite form of music. Just that, if I'm going to discover new bands now I want to do it with a CD from the comfort of my own home. I have no patience to sit through a mediocre metal band in hopes of finding something truly great, because if they are mediocre chances are I've heard something just like them before and very often. I don't have time for that, especially if it's going to drag me so far from home. On the other hand, I can sit through indie bands even if they are mediocre, because it's new for me. Just so long as there is at least one really good band to see.
Oh yeah. Being at a smoke free bar was simply MARVELOUS.
"Tell me how much they fucking suck
Hell Yeah! They fucking suck
You and your band, you fucking suck
Hell Yeah! You fucking suck
I don't give a fuck, you fucking fuck
Hell Yeah! You fucking suck
C'mon, tell me how much we fucking suck
Hell Yeah! You fucking suck"
