Author's Note: This was written for
tangertine while I was during writer's block, surprisingly enough. It was sparked when she brought up the analogy of Pin to a car crash. And while, it's not an analogy... Hope everyone enjoys! (The title's a bit of a reach, but what can I say?)
Yamapi stares at the script in his hands, the words blurring before his eyes and he rubs them furiously, trying to keep himself awake. Hands slide down his shoulders and slowly press against them, trying to mold the muscles there to the person's desire. Yamapi finds himself relaxing into them, even sighing a little as his eyes shut - it's been a while since he's been able to relax after all. But then he realizes his own situation and his eyes shot open as he shrugs the hands off - even using one hand to push them off (a little gently because it still Jin and he's still Yamapi), straightening the script in his hands as he refocuses on the multiple lines that he needed to learn in a number of hours. "Jin, now's not the time," he hisses furiously, "you know I can't afford to relax now."
Yamapi doesn't feel Jin's warmth and air around him and that makes him more irritable and easily annoyed, but he knows better than to ask Jin back. "All work and no play makes Pi a dull dull boy," Jin says plaintively. When Yamapi meets Jin's eyes, there's an air about them that Yamapi can't quite pin down.
"All work gets Pi paid," Yamapi snaps, his eyes scanning the page but nothing's really sinking in.
"Pi knows better than to over-work," Jin says and Yamapi meets his eyes - there's a sign that he wants to add in another line. Possibly a "you've seen that happen" but Yamapi isn't sure - he's not sure he can really read what Jin is thinking anymore.
"Jin's being stupid - Pi would never overwork himself."
"Well, Pi sure does look like he is." Jin's eyes narrow and Yamapi struggles to look away; looking into fire hurts.
"Jin shouldn't jump to conclusions," Yamapi snaps.
There's a noticable pause between them and Yamapi fidgets in his seat before he hears Jin's murmur of a response, "Yamashita should stop being so pissed at the world when there's no reason." Yamapi bristles at the use of his name, but he only listens - doesn't say a word - as Jin gets up from his chair, and even though Yamapi can feel the fury emitting from Jin's body in waves, he makes no sign - doesn't stop, doesn't growl - nothing. Yamapi's not sure if he's glad or disappointed for that.

Yamapi's sure Jin's noticed his distance - it's not like he's being very subtle about it and it's not as though Jin's as dumb as people take him for. But he doesn't seem to do anything about it, as though he's expecting Yamapi to just snap out of it in a matter of seconds. So when Yamapi stumbles into their apartment at three in the morning, still a little drunk after a drinking session with Ryo, he's a little more than disappointed, but at the same time relieved when Jin's not just waiting there for him.
"You're late," Jin yawns, seeming to have woken up by the sound of the door. He flicks the light switch on as he pads into the living room where Yamapi had crashed, out off strength to move any further.
"Un," Yamapi breathes, his mouth muffled by the pillow he was resting his head on. His eyes are half closed and he mentally tries to calculate how many hours he has before he has to wake up for work the next day.
Jin grunts in response, slumping into the love seat near Yamapi's. "You made a promise."
Yamapi sighs - an exaggerated sigh, "Is now really the time?"
Jin inhales sharply. Yamapi can't see him, his eyes are closed after all, but he can feel Jin's gaze on him, taking in everything and anything. "...Distant."
"...The answer is my patience," Yamapi quips.
"Not the time for jokes, Pi," Jin snaps. Yamapi makes a noise that's a mixture of a sigh and a groan before he sits up, pulling the pillow into his lap and frowning at Jin.
"What's this about?" he asks, knowing full well, but he wants to hear Jin say it - as though it means more if Jin knows what's wrong without having Yampi have to explain it.
Jin stares at him and takes in his appearance - Yamapi knows it's probably not pleasant - dark, bags under his eyes, disheveled hair, pale skin. He leans forward, his hand outstretched - maybe to brush Yamapi's hair out of his eyes - but Yamapi jerks backwards. Jin pulls back, his face showing no sign of what he's thinking, feeling. "...Forget it," he ends up saying.
Yamapi stares back; he doesn't have command over his mouth and blurts out, "Is that all you have to say?"
"Is that all you have to say?"
Yamapi doesn't answer and he just watches as Jin shuffles back into his bedroom without a second thought, leaving Yamapi to slump back on the couch and breathe. It's all he can do anymore - just breathe.

"Just let me drive already," Jin snaps, trying to snatch the keys from Yamapi's hand.
Yamapi keeps them out of Jin's reach, a glare in his eyes. "I'm not so incompetent that I can't drive us home." Jin's fingers brush against Yamapi's knuckles and Yamapi recoils in reaction; if Jin noticed, he makes no sign.
"I'm not saying you're incompetent, idiot." He makes another reach but Yamapi keeps it farther away and Jin pulls back, pissed. "I'm saying you're too tired to even drive us. I don't plan on dying for a few more years."
"Well, then you can trust me," Yamapi says. "Or have you stopped doing that too?"
Jin reels back, looking like he'd been slapped harshly. He recovers a moment later, "What are you talking about?"
Yamapi ignores the question, sliding into the car. Jin follows, sitting in the passenger's side. His hands shake as he inserts the key into the ignition and he has to blink his eyes over and over again before he feels like he's a little more awake than he was before.
"Pi, you shouldn't be trying to drive," Jin says, his voice worried.
"Maybe you should be thinking more about important things,"Yamapi snaps as he puts the car to drive. "Like how you so screwed up that last hip roll," he mocks.
"Hey! That was very important," Jin snaps, sounding irritable. Yamapi watches out of the corner of his eye as Jin settles into his seat, his eyes staring intensively on the road as he crosses his arms against his chest.
It's the last thing he remembers seeing, along with the bright white lights of another car. The last thing he hears is the screeching of car tires. The last thing he feels is Jin's hand wrapped around his arm, his nails digging into his skin. The last thing that he remembers saying is Jin's name - a whimper, not a yell.

"You're an idiot" is the first thing Yamapi hears when he wakes up. He knows that voice; it's Jin's although it sounds different - scratchy, a little raspy.
Yamapi can feel his head pounding and even though he knows his eyes are open, all he can see is black. His hands fly to his face and he's fumbling with the bandages before he feels a cool hand on his and they're calmly pulling him away. He thinks he feels tears but he's not entirely sure.
"Stop that, you're going to mess up the healing," Jin says soothingly, his thumb caressing the skin on Yamapi's hand.
"What, what happened?" Yamapi asks, his own voice raspy - he guesses from unuse.
"What do you think?" Jin asks - and it's his voice that brings Yamapi comfort, a comfort he hasn't felt in days (due to his own fault than anything else).
Yamapi's mind reels as he tries to remember, wants to remember but at the same time, he's afraid for what he'll find. "I was... driving, right?"
Jin makes a noise of agreement. "You were tired."
"I was not," Yamapi says indignantly, his hand clutching at Jin's - for comfort, for reassurance, but Jin's chuckle says otherwise.
"You were. Stop lying; I'm not mad." Jin says.
Yamapi has to wonder why and he does.
"Stupid. It's because I know you." Jin's hands drift to Yamapi's face, the bandages only covering his eyes and Yamapi leans into Jin's cool fingers. "Shouldn't have driven that night."
Yamapi sighs, and only nods. There's another noise and he thinks he can feel another presence in the room. Jin's hands leave him and Yamapi almost asks for him to come back when he hears a deep booming voice tell him. "You're getting ready for surgery, Yamashita-kun." Hands fumble with him and his sheets and Yamapi panics at the thought that he's going in blindly - literally and figuratively.
Hands brush against his and he knows those fingers.
"Jin?" Yamapi cries, his breath growing ragged and his heart pounding.
"It'll be okay, Pi. You're in safe hands." Jin's fingers brush against his own and in a split second, Yamapi's sure he felt a spart of electricity. "You'd better be alive when I get out of my operation, or else I'll kill you," Jin jokes.
Yamapi thinks this is normal - this is them and it's like coming back home after being away for months. He can't keep his voice from cracking as he retorts, "I'd say the same for you but you're too stubborn to die."
Jin's laugh is rich and deep and Yamapi doesn't even have to see with his own two eyes that Jin's sincere. "It's a fact you can rely on," Jin says proudly. The bed's moving and Yamapi with it, but Jin keeps up. Jin's still beside him, his fingers darting out to catch Yamapi's when the nurses move out of the way.
"Don't be mushy," Yamapi counters. "I'm sure the nurses want to cry now." He's not really sure; it's just something to say.
Jin snorts, "It's because they're looking at your face." Yamapi growls and he makes a mental note to hit Jin next time he sees him.
"Screw you," Yamapi mumbles, "I hope they cut something off in your operation." The bed comes to a stop and there's someone breathing in his ear.
"Well," Jin breathes, "I'm sure you'd miss my penis if it's gone." He pulls back, laughing and Yamapi's sure his cheeks have turned a bright red.
"Way to be crude, Bakanishi," Yamapi snorts and soon the bed's moving and he can hear the doctor telling Jin that he has to stay behind. There's a brief touch of fingers again before Yamapi's pulled through doors.
They tell him come back alive.
