tinyanglRating: PG-13
Words: 2021
Characters: Largely just Jin. Pin Segment. Appearances by Shige, KAT-TUN, Arashi.
Summary: Jin doesn't like to read. He manages his way to not through various methods.
Author's Note: I kinda forgot what prompted this. I think it had something to do with me joking to someone about a photoshoot with Jin and a book, and I went "Awww, Jin's pretending to read! How cute!" ...I was only joking of course, but then I wrote this. So who knows. XP (This...should go in time order. So, the first scene? Anego era. AKA, before LA!Jin.)
I.
Jin's not illiterate; he swears he's not. It's just that he gets tired of reading and his eyes hurt if he stares at text for way too long. So can you really blame him when he finds himself adlibbing during Shounen Club and coming up with the strangest situation? (Yamapi still won't let that time go from all those years ago when he came up with a story for his solo Hesitate and it just didn't make sense at all. Even to him.) It just doesn't seem to catch on to people though that, to Jin, reading is more of a hassle than anything in the world. And can't they all just learn to work with him?
Scripts are the worse of anything. He can still remember the nights when he had to memorize entire scenes in one night and be expected to walk up at an ungodly hour, act fabulously and repeat it all the next day. It takes the director a bit of time before he figures out that Jin's just having problems reading his script. (Jin always thought that directors were supposed to be quicker on the uptake than that.) So when the director finally pulls him aside and asks what the problem is, Jin has to finally confess that he has trouble reading. He's not sure if the director actually believes him or thinks that he's just plain illiterate, but he honestly doesn't care.
The next day, Jin gets his script along with a CD. Inside is a recording of someone reading his lines for him along with the page number so he can follow along. Jin grins.
II.
He finds himself having to learn English for some of his songs. Jin's learned his lesson from some of his previous encounters with the English language so he figures that maybe this time, he can actually get someone to help him learn what the hell this song is saying.
The first person Jin seeks out is Yamapi, because really, when doesn't Jin turn to Yamapi when he needs help? And although Yamapi isn't able to help him by much (considering both their English skills are quite lacking), but he does give Jin a name and Jin grins as he searches for the person that Yamapi had suggested who he finds in the NewS break room, reading a book (an English one to boot) and Jin's positive that Yamapi's right on the money with this one.
Jin plops down on the couch, staring at the person there, as though he had expected them to have turned around as soon as he arrived. However, Shige's attention is otherwise occupied by the book in front of him, and not even loud coughs in his ear are able to tear him away. That sticks until Jin clears his throat, practically choking in Shige's ear and he snatches Shige's book out of his hands.
"Yes, Akanishi-kun?" Shige asks a little weary, taking off his glasses and rubbing his eyes.
Jin produces his lyric sheets and holds them out in front of him, smiling brightly. "I need help with English."
Shige raises an eyebrow, "Aren't you supposed to be really good at it already?"
Jin can only pout, and Shige finds himself wavering instantly because Shige, with all his unexperience involving Jin, finds that he cannot hold up long against one of his pouts. Which explains why seconds later, Shige agrees to help Jin and Jin can only beam happily at the prospect of not having to spend hours on end (and incessantly badgering Ueda) and trying to figure out how half these words were pronounced.
III.
He most definitely wanted to go to LA. To study... Right. But he finds that getting everything arranged involves a whole lot of paperwork that he just cannot deal with. It's all in Japanese, yes. But it's all this legal work that Jin just doesn't understand (and he had already used all his pouting on Shige to the point that Shige had almost become immune. ...Almost). So he finds that he needs to wrangle someone else to help him figure out his papers.
The rest of KAT-TUN is essentially knocked out of this category since most of them are still rather pissed that he even wants to leave, and the others that aren't just don't want to bother with papers (and probably think it's his just desserts for leaving like this). He'd ask NewS, but he thinks they're having their own problems. So he's left with the rest of the company.
It's not often that he finds himself asking Matsujun for help, but he figures if anyone knows how to deal with the higher ups, Arashi would. ...Right? Jun stares at him, snorts a little and slams the door in his face. Jin blinks a couple of times before he starts knocking again.
"Matsumoto-kun?!" he almost cries and it's a worried looking Aiba who opens the door.
"Jun-kun!" Aiba whines after taking one glance at Jin, turning to look at Jun who had taken a seat on one of the couches, his legs crossed and all his focus on a magazine. Frowning, Aiba takes Jin by the hand, dragging him into the room.
Jin sniffles (just for effect, of course) which leads to some wry grins passed between Sho and Nino as Ohno's distracted by something or another, except for Aiba who's intent on getting Jun's attention as he half sprawls himself onto Jun's lap, blocking the magazine from sight.
It takes Jun about 5 minutes before he finally snaps (and Jin can hear Sho groaning and Nino's laughter in the background along with the tell-tale sound of a watch beep). "Masaki, what do you think you're doing?"
Aiba frowns at Jun, his eyes wide and almost teary (and Jin thinks he wants to applaud him for the act, but then Aiba sniffles too realistically and Jin has to wonder if it's even an act). "Your kouhai comes down to ask for advice and you shut the door in his face? I thought you treated them better than that!"
Jun snorts, but it's met with a smack in the head as Aiba forces Jun into a bowing position (while he's sitting which makes for a very uncomfortable pose, Jin thinks). Aiba grins brightly at Jin, "He'll definitely help you! Jun-kun's very kind. He just likes to pretend to be mean and prickly like a cactus."
"Who's pretending?" Jin hears Jun mutter, but Jin's more focused on the fact that they essentially agreed to do his paperwork for him.
"Really?!" Jin squeals happily, taking Aiba's hands into his own. "I'm so glad to have senpais who care so deeply for me."
Aiba's eyes shine with pride and Jin wonders how Jun exactly manages to deal with this group day in and day out. "It's what we do!" Aiba exclaims, slinging an arm around Jun's shoulders.
Jin grins brightly; he doesn't care how Jun deals with them as long as Jin can manipulate them to do what he wants.
IV.
He's a little surprised when he gets Yamapi's first letter. Of all the people in the world, Jin figured that Yamapi would know that Jin just doesn't like to read (which makes school a little awkward but he manages). When he starts reading though, he realizes just why Yamapi had written it instead of spoken it. Although, to be fair, the time difference doesn't help much.
Yamapi picks up on the 3rd ring, sounding exhausted but when he hears Jin's voice, it's almost as though that makes up for everything. Jin has the letter in front of him and starts reciting parts of it. "I dream of your hands on my body, caressing my-"
"Wha!?" Yamapi interrupts, sounding a mixture of horrified and amused. "Don't read my letter first thing!"
Jin chuckles into the phone, "You wrote porn on a letter? Isn't it supposed to be called phone sex? I don't think I've heard of letter sex."
Yamapi grumbles, "Well, it's very hard to stay awake when you're calling me. The time difference is just too much. So... I thought a letter would be best."
"But...." Jin starts, sighing, "I don't read. You know this!"
"Jin. You can read, stop being lazy." Yamapi snaps. "I'm going to bed; I have a shoot in the morning." Without warning, Yamapi hangs up and Jin is left staring at his phone, agape. His eyes narrow and he hangs up the phone too. Well, he thinks, Two can play this game.
The next time Yamapi calls, Jin is prepared for the outburst.
"I want you inside of me," Yamapi starts the call, the words gritting through his teeth. "I wish I could touch you, fondle you, just be with you." Yamapi takes a breath and Jin can't help but grin at the obvious sound of irritation in his best friend's voice. "I miss your cock. Jin."
Jin laughs a little, "I thought that last part was especially important. I didn't want to leave anything out."
He can hear Yamapi suck in a breath, "I get that. But why a postcard?"
It takes a bit before Jin can get his composure together long enough to answer. "I was in a rush and it was the first thing I could find!" Jin exclaims, almost sounding horrified. "I wanted to send you something for my appreciation."
After that, Yamapi never sends Jin a letter again. (And the number of calls triples. Jin got a lot of action that way.)
I.
He's back and already there's something to read. (You'd think they'd at least ease him into it. Didn't they think he read enough for school? ...Although that was a lie in itself.) He stares at the script for the press conference and just a few sentences in, Jin finds his head spinning from trying to figure out what they're making him say and what those random English phrases were. ("I do my best my work," is one in particular that confuses him to no end.)
The rest of his band members are busy with their own things, trying to figure out the best way they can say certain things so it doesn't sound scripted. Jin looks around and finds one person who apparently has finished studying his script and was now listening to music.
"Tat-chan~" Jin coos, settling into Ueda's lap and Ueda rolls his eyes.
"You went to school, Jin. I'm sure you can manage to read a simple script," he snaps, pushing the male off his lap.
Jin pouts cutely, "Don't act so mean, Tat-chan. You know I still have problems reading." He points at a line in the script, "If you could just... help me decipher this, that'd be great!"
Ueda only raises an eyebrow and returns back to listening to music.
Jin frowns. He turns to catch Kame's eye and bounces towards him, his script wrapped tightly in his hands and a smile plastered on his face. "Kame-chan!"
"No."
"But-" Jin starts, cutting off quickly as he watches Kame look up from his script, giving Jin a pointed look.
"I'm not helping you," Kame says simply and Jin's sure there's meant to be something more to that line, but he's not sure he can figure it out or if he wants to for that matter.
"Okay," Jin nods, a little dishearted by this, but then he catches sight of a beaming Junno staring straight at him, and Jin wonders if he can use this to his advantage. "Taguchi!" he stands in front of Junno, his script held out. "Was the script easy to understand?"
Junno nods vigorously, "Very! I think Jin should be able to understand it simply, ne? He's gotten so much training outside of Japan! He's smarter than anyone here!"
Jin blinks a couple of times before turning to look at Koki and Nakamaru who are staring at Junno increduously. When he gives them a funny look, they only shrug at him and return back to reading their script (and Koki gives him a glare that tells him that he really shouldn't ask Koki for help at all....Not like Jin would have anyway). Jin gives Junno an awkward smile before nodding in agreement. "Thanks, Taguchi. Nice of you to say," he says a little strangled, wondering if he even sounded sincere.
Jin sits back where he started and sighs, flipping through the script. There were times when he just couldn't win it all.
