Weekly Asian Post, Vol. 95
'Cuz we are living in a material world, and I am a material girl..

OK, so the song doesn't exactly fit me, since as far as I know, I am not a female. That being said, I think this is a great line to evaluate as we near the climax of the holiday season. Before you spend your $5 gift wrap to wrap that $3 box of chocolates, have a seat and consider with me the commercialization of Christmas in America.

I started off by mentioning the gift wrap because as I was walking around the Charlottesville Mall today, I came upon something so ridiculous that it baffled me. Amongst the other "hallway stands", a pet name I use to refer to your Dippin' Dots and Cell Phone faceplate-selling stands, was a stand specifically meant for gift wrapping. In this case, you'd be paying the person at the stand for the paper AND the labor. Have we really become this lazy? I mean sure, I do love to put my ass's indentation into the couch each and every single day, but I am more than willing to wrap every gift I purchase for a loved one. Let me clarify before I go on: it's not about the gift wrapping, it's about the stand dedicated specifically for the activity. I understand if you're in Macy's, buying your favorite gal some sort of overpowered perfume or overstated mascara, and the person at the stand offers to gift wrap your purchase. I know some of you at this moment have to be thinking "But Jon, there's no difference between that and the gift wrapping stand in the mall!". If that's your opinion, then I accept it. I just think there is no good reason why anyone needs to visit a stand just to get a gift wrapped.

Anyway, I can't say too much more about the commercialization of Christmas. I just got an Xbox 360 today as my Christmas gift. My family isn't big on keeping the "big" gifts under wraps til Christmas, so I got to bust it out today and play it to my heart's content. If you're thinking about how spoiled I am, I agree with you, but my guilt was alleviated a little bit by the fact that I specifically asked them not to get me a birthday present in August so that I could make this big purchase for Christmas. Even so, I still feel the guilt of having my parents spend so much money, and I continually wonder how I am so blessed to even get something like this.

Have a Merry Christmas and I hope I will see you over this break!
