Characterization/art/fic pet peeves and deal-breakers.

1. Barnaby doesn't get Kotetsu very well. :(

But isn't he among the few characters who do.... Moreover, he is pretty assured in that himself. Him angsting about not getting Kotetsu rings untrue.

2. Nathan is nosy.
Nathan, like many other characters in the show, has a very realistic way of handling certain matters. He is interested in other people and their relationships (particularly romantic ones). But he isn't going to start playing matchmaker or take an active role in other people's lives on his own.

3. "He has matured so much!"
There's a difference between "he enjoys socializing a bit more nowadays, that's awesome!" and "wow, I'm so proud he can suddenly deal with shit on his own!". The patronizing tone. Which is hypocritical, even, considering Kotetsu's way of dealing with shit amounted to "I'll keep pushing things off and avoiding everyone and my own feelings until everything explodes in my face".

4. Kotetsu is uncomfortable when Barnaby shows some sort of affection toward him. At all uncomfortable.
He has two reactions to this sort of thing happening. One: "Huh, is something going on?" Two: "I felt like I was dying just moments ago and still kinda do, you're hurting me very much and also hugging me. Score!" aka "Kyaaa~ he called me by name~" aka "Cooking for me. Damn, I promised myself I wouldn't cry."

5. Barnaby and Karina are rivals.
Implying a mutual relationship. Karina sees Barnaby as a rival, this is canon by now. Barnaby's uncertainties about his relationship with Kotetsu, when there are any, lie with Kotetsu. An underaged student's impossible crush on someone who sees her as a daughter figure registering as any kind of threat on his own bond with that person might be moderately amusing in comical situations (although personally I find it unseemly), but in serious ones it's just mindboggling. There is really nothing in the show that would indicate that Barnaby wants to monopolize Kotetsu's time or attention. There are, however, examples of him wanting the exact opposite.

6. Barnaby is unsure about his future during the first time skip.
But it was his ideal happy ending! It had been his whole life for a long time, sure, but it was something he wanted to get over with. The revenge thing certainly had meaning, it's not like he forgot about it after more or less accepting Kotetsu in episode 8-9ish. He couldn't ignore it as long as it was relevant in some way (but even the he really didn't want it to be relevant anymore). As long as that was not the case, having Kotetsu was something he could now freely enjoy with other matters brought to a satisfactory conclusion. After Maverick things were different, but with that reveal the whole situation changed. Catching Jake was the reward at the end of a very long journey. Maverick was the revelation that there had been no journey in the first place.

7. Kotetsu is a normal person who socializes with others in an extremely healthy fashion.
He isn't going to seek out other Heroes to hang out with on his leisure time. Any effort to get better acquianted with his life during that time is not going to result in deep and revealing conversation. He will either not notice or will subtly re-direct the conversation elsewhere, and he will not pry into or notice their problems unless they are obvious. Yes, Antonio is included in most of this.

8. Antonio gets guardianship over Kaede.
He has met her once. Kotetsu asked him to take care of her that day because the situation was dangerous and he wanted her to be safe and eventually back with her family. Getting "Kotetsu would want Antonio to adopt her if he dies" out of that is, uh. A very naïve view.

By the way, the obsession some seem to have with Barnaby needing to be saved or putting him in hopeless situations or situations with no possibility for progress is seriously skeevy. He has been denied agency his whole life. Why not focus on giving him that instead.
