So I have only one theory, because this show is too cool for theories. Their actual answers are far better.
But now I think the Observers are actually evolved humans. However many millions years later, humans eventually evolve into them. They aren't hindered by primal urges, taste, food, sex, pain, etc. They seem impervious to all of it. And at some point, they decided to observe the past. They can travel through a linear time plane and watch the historic events that led to the evolution of human beings. But the story of Fringe is how their traveling through time, disrupted the natural order of events and caused the story we are watching now. The Observer interupted Walternate, who failed to see the cure for Peter. Causing our Walter to cross over to the other universe and ultimately destroy both. And all of their interaction is now how they are trying to course correct it. Meaning they essentially used Peter to fix their mistake.
But it just got so much trippier than that. And that was a serious WTF ending.
To be honest, I was really digging the what-if future. It was pretty damn cool and had a lot of potential. But then they did that ending and made you forget about the whole thing.
This season wasn't the best, But I love that they completely ditched story lines that just weren't working. Altlivia, the emo drama, and the alt universe got old real quick. Oh, and of course the love triangle. Thank god they didnt do a JJ disaster repeat.
