Inspired by a
few pals, here's that recommend-something meme:
Please recommend:
01. A movie
02. A book
03. A musical artist, song, or album
04. An LJ user not on my friends list
BONUS:
05. Some other piece of media--newspaper, teevee show, website, video game, whatever.
Then, if you please, add any or all of this request to your own LJ.
Movie - Swimming to Cambodia, which you may have seen already but which holds a high place in my esteem because it's so brilliant. Poor Spalding Gray.
Book - I'm working on reading a fascinating book by Harry Matthews called The Sinking of the Odradek Stadium. I'm only about 30 pages in, but it comes highly recommended by fellow linguaphiles. It consists of letters between a married couple: a scholarly treasure-hunter who has spent a lot of time in the bars of early 70s Miami, and his wife, a woman from a small Asian nation. The wife's letters to him are garbled and phonetic adventures in English, sprinkled liberally with Italian, French and her nation's language. It's worth checking out, I believe, if only for the fun of piecing together what she means to say.
Music - Uhhhh. I haven't really been down with the music world much since 1996, so I'll just have to recommend the oevure of the Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev.
LJ user - nickfarr is a photoessayist who completed a great project on Los Angeles, and is now shooting mostly winter-evening scenes in Michigan. I could stare and drool at his images for hours - I've used many of them as my backgrounds.
Media - This may not count so much, but it's still worth a look: I just downloaded the Trillian messenger program, and it's pretty sweet. It allows a person to log on with his or her aim, irc, icq, yahoo and msn user names - they send e-mail notifications if a person uses any of the e-mail services attached to those chat programs, it's customizable, and it has a free version that has given me little trouble.

Let me know how you like the book--Is it fiction, or, like, found documents?
What happened in 1996?
Ooh, Trillian, I love it. Especially SecureIM and Cubbie's Microscopic skin. Check it out.

And with the music thing and 96 - I just stopped buying CDs that year, basically. I think that was the last year I had disposable income that I felt like disposing on music instead of on books.
Thanks on the recommendation for Trillian stuffs. What a great toy it is.
