One Hour, Forty-Three Minutes, Fifty-Nine Seconds

My Half-Marathon time today at the Wirefly National Marathon (and Half-Marathon).  I'm pretty darn pleased with myself.  It's pretty much exactly an eight minute mile pace, so I'm cool with that.  It kinda sucked that I got a really slow start though, because there were SO many people in the way, and Kevin and I were stuck in the back with the ( Read more... )

That's awesome! Congrats! I can't wait for you to be in Chicago in October, too.

As someone who's never tried any Lush products before, what do you like from them?

Thanks, man! Not sure if I'll be back in Chicago for good yet, at that point, but I booked a hotel room close to Grant Park regardless. I'm not all about trying to commute downtown with thousands of other people in the morning, ya know ( ... )

Sweet. I'm going to have to start working my way through some Lush stuff. There is just so much of it, I didn't know where to start!

So what do you think of the latest landlord stuff? Do you agree with my cousin to not pay the last month's rent?

I KNOW!! I randomly saw it on the "new in paperback" table-- I had no idea Ellis wrote a new one! It's from 2005. I'm sure it's chock full of vintage Ellis drugs, sex, and gore. I'll let you know...

Yay! Ruth's Chris! What did you get with the Lobster and Petite Fillet? The seared Ahi appetizer was pretty awesome when we had it.

i got the onion and tomato salad, dave got the ceasar salad. they were ok.
dave got the kobe fillet that was the special (65 bucks!) but it was so good. thats the best meat you can get as far as i know. I could tell it was better than my petite fillet. we also got garlic mashed that were good.
then dessert was creme brulee, i didnt like it that much. too much carmelized sugar crunches!
overall, go for the steaks, not for the sides and dessert.
Lawry's the Prime Rib in Chicago is by far superior! We need to take you there!!!!!

I don't know, Nach. My instinct tells me for you to pay the rent. That is the 'right' thing to do as far as the law is concerned. The advice your cousin is giving you is more of the kind of advice someone who was not a lawyer would give. It reeks of an ethics violation. If you go to court for the unpaid rent and lose, you'll be out court fees, the security deposit, AND the last month's rent. It's up to you, I mean, I see where he's coming from, but if you want to keep your actions clean in case you do end up in small claims, paying the rent is the way to go.

Do we have any recourse then if he does keep our security deposit for unfounded reasons? That's really what I'm worried about - that he's going to keep it, making some claims against us that our apartment was dirty, etc, and that we're going to get screwed.

Yeah-- you could take him to small claims for the deposit. He has to give you reasons for the $$ he doesn't give back. So... since you are expecting the landlord to pull something on you, have proof the apt is clean-- pics, etc., and, if you can, have him do the final inspection while you are there (when handing over the keys) so that he can't make any damages up later.

Oh yeah, we wanted him to do a final walk through with us anyway. I'm worried that he's going to be too busy or out of town or some other stupid excuse.

geez nach! you really got screwed in the good landlord deptartment!
the guy Dave and I had for our apt in wrigleyville was completely nuts, but at least he didnt care that we painted or anything. having paint on the walls does not cause someone walking through to not rent the place. He's just an asshole! Do what Jen says, she knows her stuff! :)

We asked when we got our keys if we could paint, of course we asked his secretary because he wasn't around. She said yes, as long as we paint it back when we move. When he left us our first note, he flipped out and said that we never got permission to paint, it didn't count that we got it verbally since it wasn't in writing!

And yeah - that's what I've been saying. Our paint job is not causing them to not rent the apartment. In fact, we've been telling people that it will be white again before we move out.

The funny thing is, he's been a good landlord up until a month ago. We've never really had trouble with him until all of this crap started.
