just a quickie... martikal November 9 2005, 13:55:28 UTC
i'm sure you have read it too but just wanted to emphasize this: "... for the first time they are getting organized, across cities, across neighborhood rivalries, they target specific companies implanted in their areas that refuse to hire local youth...And yes, they burn cars: the cars they cant afford. They burn schools: schools that have never acknowledged their value, (for many of them) their culture as immigrants, or their specific qualities and needs..."

this is the BEST response to the people criticizing the 'rioters' for destroying their 'own' communities. In a sense they don't identify with the neighborhoods. It does not feel like home to them. Never been welcomed anyways, even though their migration was directly related to french colonialism. Yes it is nihilist, but it is righteous too . If they have to live under that kind of social system, why should they care about cars, buildings, roads??

There are a number of ways to look at it.

It certainly goes deeper than kids wanting to cause trouble. But I would hesitate to ascribe this much philosophy to their actions - regardless of how much I would like to believe it's true.

certainly i don't want a glorify it... but it is an outbreak/cry. the philosophy as you put it is probably not identified even within the different groups of people yet. that usually happens (with actions like these) once it dies and people write books about them
