If I had an extra $5,000 to spare, I'd buy this:
I saw a large print of this photograph of a gondola station and San Giorgio Maggiore in the window of the
Jennifer Kostuik Gallery in Yaletown last week. The photo does not do it justice. It's more beautiful and haunting in person. The artist, David Burdeny, is local. His series
Traces of Time, is currently being exhibited at the gallery, featuring several photographs shot in Italy and France when, according to the exhibit description, "form, light and atmosphere come together to create something remarkable."
I don't know much about art or how it works when photography is the medium. I wonder whether I am correct to assume artists would not be using Photoshop to artificially tinker with the photo. Does anyone know?
I also like this one of an Italian castello:
I love the intricate design and vivid colours on the ceiling and wall and, well, everywhere, really. And that shaft of light -- stunning. I'm seriously torn about which I'd buy first with the imaginary few extra grand I have to throw around. Both photos are available in smaller versions. A 13 x 16 inch print goes for around $1,200.
