Name: Thaddeus (Tad) Gavril
Age: 33
Gender: Male
Ethnicity: Greek (Cypriot)
Religion: Eastern Christian
Marital status: Single
Occupation: Harbourmaster
Physical description: Tad is fairly tall, deeply tanned, and solidly built, but he is now losing a bit of his sailor's muscle tone. A long scar marks the back of his right forearm. His black hair is just below shoulder-length, and his beard is trimmed close. For work, wears a somewhat dressed-up version of nautical garb, with a coat in city colors, a very white shirt, dark loose trousers, soft boots, and a cap; gold braid, keys, and anchors on his coat and cap mark his authority.
PB: (undecided)
Back story: Tad is an immigrant in Kostantiniyye. A sixth son of a fishing family, his parents could do little for him but get him a decent education and arrange a good berth as a crewman on a trading ship at the age of 16, having already learned the essentials of sailing watercraft with his family. A quick study with a good background, he learned steamship operation and advanced quickly to the position of first mate on his ship, but after a few years, was eager to put down roots and leave the traveling life. His captain put in a good word for him with the pilots' guild in Kostantiniyye, and he apprenticed there for a couple of years before being raised to journeyman status, worked a few years more, and then leapt at the opportunity when the former harbourmaster passed away, greasing a couple of palms to convince key figures to support his bid. He has been busy establishing his position over the past couple of years, developing good working relationships, then settling into town and establishing his household. Up until now, he has steered clear of establishing serious romantic entanglements, keeping his options open, but things may be settling into a more stable pattern, and his position and wealth may offset his age in the game of courtship.

How do you see this character fitting into the game?: The harbourmaster is one of the major bureaucrats of the city. He reports to the council, and works closely with the dockmaster, the fleet admiral, the director of customs, and the head of the pilots' and navigators' guild. He is well-placed to help or hinder anyone trying to move by water, and knows a good deal about such movements. He supplements his official income with "gifts" from people looking for information and from those who want to ensure his discretion alike; he also has been known to subtly speed along or delay the processing for a ship's arrival or departure, and even might facilitate the illicit entry of goods into the city on occasion. He is even rumored to have the means to contact certain of the pirates who ply the Black and Aegean Seas and the Sea of Marmara. Within the city, he is a customer of the merchants of the good things in life, a regular partygoer, and a bit player in the city's elite social scene.

Tad might've had dealings with the dirigible captain this character works for, since his smuggling route has taken him through Kostantiniyye a handful of times. If you want to talk specifics just shoot me a PM here or over on middlemarching. :)

I'm a bit scattered today, but FWIW, I think that at the least my sometime smuggling character (this one; profile page has the application) would be interested in yours. Would you prefer quietly cooperative, adversarial, what?

Yes, we would likely be interested in each other in some sense! The kind of stuff you smuggle would mostly suit Tad just fine: high-value goods whose movement doesn't threaten anyone are exactly the kind of thing he likes to be in on. The al-khymic stuff might be a bit less cool with Tad though, because of its potential uses; how Manal deals with his reluctance there can make good story fodder.
