THE BASICS
Name: Imanu'el ben-Yoshiyahu (born Rachel bat-Eliakim)
Age: 36
Gender: Male
Nationality and/or ethnicity: German and Greek heritage. He speaks Greek and Turkish fluently, but has lost most of his German given he has no real excuse to speak it anymore.
Religion: Presents himself as a practitioner of Reformed Judaism, but is privately still attached to the Orthodoxy of his youth. When he isn't at work, he takes great comfort in the mitzvot and religious meditation.
Marital status: Unmarried. Out of a powerful self-preservation instinct, Imanu'el makes a conscious effort to avoid emotional attachments to just about anyone. When he does experience sexual or romantic attraction, however, it is exclusively for women.
Occupation: Officer of the Kostantiniyye City Guard.
Physical description: A man of middling height and a solid, stocky build, with a face that most wouldn't describe as handsome (which probably didn't register as beautiful for Rachel, either). His eyes and hair are both unimpressive shades of brown, the former often caught up in a terse frown, the latter cut shapelessly short. He is, on the whole, unremarkable in appearance, which is exactly the way he likes it.
PB: K.D. Lang
FURTHER DETAILS
Back story:
Imanu'el ben-Yoshiyahu buried Rachel bat-Eliakim twenty years ago, beneath an olive tree somewhere between Athens and Jerusalem. That is how he thinks, how he must think, of her now; a girl from an island who died, whose belongings he sold to nomads along the roads of the Empire until the only thing left of her in him was a name. So he left it at the olive tree and took a new name instead: Imanu'el; 'God is with us,' with him, because he knew henceforth that no one else could be.
He arrived in Kostantiniyye a decade ago as the body guard of a Byzantine bureaucrat who, in addition to forging an excellent set of identity papers for him, also put in a good word with the city garrison. Imanu'el has served the city as a dutiful officer for the past eight years and endeavors not to look at the captaincy with covetous eyes.
Personality: As first impressions go, Imanu'el is a stern, formidable personality, exasperated by smalltalk and intolerant of politics. He is also devout in his Jewish faith and frequently wracked by guilt over his choice to abandon his life as Rachel, including a family he's had no contact with for nearly two decades.
How do you see this character fitting into the game?: I like to think of Imanu'el as unshakeably noble in his intentions, and would like to see how his fundamental motivation to do--and be--good jive with Kostantiniyye. I figure he can interact with a variety of different character types, too.
Anything else: I only have academic familiarity with the practice of Judaism, so if I misrepresent something, please correct me!
