I am crazy, deal with it.
We were watching Born Into Brothels at school and it reminded me of my own trips overseas. These people in the country don't use birth control and have tons of children. They live in small villages. They send their children to the city to work as servants for rich families. These children do NOT receive an education. They only see their parents during the summer holidays and MAYBE over winter and spring break for a few days. Children often start working as servants from the age of 8 or 9.
I'd like to open an orphanage or a boarding school so these children can be EDUCATED properly and break the cycle. I want to cry as I write this. We're all so lucky to have grown up in the United States and had the opportunity to get an education. Why should children in India, Pakistan, Africa, etc. be deprived of that? Isn't education a basic human right?
Another thing that bothers me is how HARD it is for people to adopt children. Kids die in orphanages everyday, and it costs well over $11,000 in fees to adopt a child. That's $11,000 that could put a kid through college. I understand that the money is needed to run orphanages, but it does seem excessive at times. Isn't there someway to cut the crap and red tape and LET people have children after careful screenings? I was on the US government website and they have BANNED adoptions from Afghanistan, and BARELY grant any to Pakistanis. These countries have so much poverty and we are just letting kids die. Yes, the US has children that need to be adopted too, but the red tape here is pretty complicated just the same. The waiting list for adopting Caucausian babies is REALLY long, and it can take well over 4 years to bring a child home. Sadly, the waiting list to adopt an African-American child is much shorter.
I'm not sure why I feel passionate about this all the sudden. But right now I am re thinking my marketing major and realizing that music isn't as important to me as changing the world is. Maybe I will just be a publicist, invest in real estate, marry a rich dude and use our money to help children.
So um.. leave me comments and tell me what you think about building orphanages here and overseas to help children. And cutting the red tape and somehow subsidizing adoption costs to make it easier to adopt a kid is also something I am interested in. I mean obviously, adoptive parents need to have money, but I just feel that the money they spend on adopting could be put towards actually taking care of the child. And don't even get me started on foster kids. I'll just get more depressed.
