The ambulance parked up near where the fisherman's truck was, and one of his boys was up there to direct the medical team in the direction of the patient. They ran out from the ambulance with a stretcher as one of them came out ahead to be on the scene as fast as he could. Removing the jacket the fisherman had laid on top of him, he looked Zaku over and tried to take a pulse as the others came in behind him.

The fisherman went to Karin and tried to help her up and move her out of the way so the medics could do their thing. "I think you should go with him in the ambulance." he told her. "Hurry on up there now. I'll come by with my boys to the hospital later to check up on you two, got it?"

Karin felt the man's hand and she was drawn to the comfort, slowly getting to her feet. Watching the EMTs run out, she moved out of their way quietly. She looked to the fisherman there and nodded, "Thank.. thank you." Before she went to the ambulance though, she walked over near where the water had been coming to the shore and picked up her cell phone. It was a piece of crap in this area, but she had stored Zaku's mother's number in it and she wanted to be sure that, once she was able to, she could call her from the hospital. Her mom and Hiroshi, too. After pocketing the phone, she watched the people taking care of Zaku, and she slowly made her way to the ambulance... Now, she needed to think about Zaku and stop her fussing. It was hard, keeping her sanity in check at the sight of Zaku's motionless figure, but she accepted the fact that now she needed to stop her silly selfishness and make sure he would be ok.

She stopped outside of the ambulance, leaning against the side of the vehicle and wiped away the last of her tears as she waited to see what the EMTs wanted her to do. I'll be damned if I'm not allowed on the ride to the hospital though...

The medical team was hurrying back, carrying Zaku on the stretcher and holding him down so he wouldn't fall off. They were quick to get to the ambulance and getting him inside and one asked Karin if she wanted to stay with him in the ambulance. After Karin agreed, they hurried her in so she could sit on the side where she could hold onto his hand as they headed towards the hospital. As soon as she was in, the doors closed behind her and they were moving. The two medics riding in the back working on Zaku hooked him up to an IV drip to get some fluids into him.

Everything seemed to be moving smoothly now... at least for a few moments, until one of the medics working with him cried out "He's not breathing! Grab the oxygen mask!" and was forced to use the full weight of his body to press down on Zaku's chest a few times to get him going again. About 30 seconds later, they confirmed he was breathing again, but it was very faint.

It took about five minutes to get to the hospital, and once they rushed out, they took Zaku inside the large white building through an emergency back door. One of the medics stayed behind to stop Karin from following. "I'm sorry, but they're taking him to the emergency room and guests aren't allowed there. I'll show you to where you can wait for him."
