The feeling of warm fur on his hand was friendly and soothing, especially after a horribly restless sleep. He flexed his fingers a little, but not without pain, so he could feel more of the small furry mass that had made contact with him. It was wiry yet gentle at the same time…

Zaku opened his eyes slowly, seeing that Shige had once again returned, now curled up in a ball next to Zaku’s hand, facing him. The small creature had large pointy ears and brown fur, along with a narrow whiskered nose. His tail was bushy and was proportionally longer to his body than that of a dog. Zaku’s mind, almost at the end of its ropes, found peace in Shige’s relaxed, sleeping form, but also found answers…

“You’re a fox, aren’t you?” Zaku didn’t know how he knew, but the words came to him rather easily. Shige perked his ears up and opened his large eyes as a response to hearing his voice.

Zaku suddenly winced in pain and turned his head back up the sky above, which was mostly obscured by the trees. The lighting was dim… it must have been evening.

“Dammit… I’m still alive…” he wheezed, having difficulty breathing.

Shige stood up and walked over to look curiously at Zaku’s expressions.

The pain was everywhere and Zaku had no more energy left to move, even if he wanted to, but he didn’t… he was defeated and he told himself to finally just admit it. If he had any water left in his body, he would have tried to shed a tear out of his own failure. He felt cold and alone as his body started to head in the direction of admitting failure as well…

Shige “barked” at Zaku a few times, but couldn’t get the boy’s attention. Zaku continued to look up at the branches above, wanting the end to come a bit faster, embracing death…

“…Karin…” he managed to whisper her name without even thinking. No… I shouldn’t think… or I’ll never be able to leave the pain of this life behind…

A headache struck Zaku immediately, causing Shige to leap backwards as he lifted his left arm rapidly to place it on his head. He groaned in agony as his headache became more prominent over the pains of the rest of his broken body. Pulling his hand away after the pain subdued itself slightly, he looked at his hand, now red from making contact with crusty dried blood. After seeing that, Zaku just let his arm drop to his side once more, and took in a deep breath, resulting in him coughing harshly for a few moments. Without any energy, he eventually stopped and looked up to his right, where the incline of the slope went up a quite a ways. Above, he heard the sound of a car passing by. There was a road up there…
