Fish is the foremost supplier of protein for nearly a billion people. However, eleven of the world’s fifteen major fisheries have exceeded their sustainable limits. Because of this, approximately three-quarters of the ocean’s commercial fish populations are in decline. Aquaculture, the raising of fish for food, seems to provide a solution. Specific species can be grown in mass quantities, eliminating the need to remove fish from the commons. Nevertheless, aquaculture has its own problems: biological pollution, organic pollution, and the use of fish for fish feeds. Can aquaculture be modified to be both economically feasible and environmentally sound?
