In my own translation of "Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo", the "kakeru" was always "conquered", which explains the title. :3
I watched this yesterday, and seriously, I was awestruck. It is one of the most awesome movies I've ever seen. I think it'll be among my top movies too, hehe (might've even beaten The Lake House in number 1). I should really applaud the directors in the way they portrayed and twicked the original story. From when and at which scene the title came out, you would already know that you're in for a unique ride through this slice-of-life x supernatural movie. This movie was more of a romance movie for me, not that I am complaining, haha. XD. The hero, Chiaki, is an absolute guy whom I would fall head-over-heels with if a guy like him ever existed in real life. XD. (But judging from his character, I can bet there are guys who are like him...hmmmmmm). Uhuh, I think he might be my kind of type, but who knows. XD. Ok, I am digressing... *ehem*
The guy on the furthest left is Chiaki. XP
I am a fan of the slice-of-life element, and Tokikake really showed it well throughout. There were also some cute and giggle-worthy parts which always kept me smiling, though at certain scenes...it was almost like a really really sad and heart-breaking tragedy movie. Ok well, I'll tell you bits of the synopsis; Konno Makoto is a normal highschool girl who has 2 close guy friends by her side whom she often hangs out with. One day, everything wasn't going well for her. She got bad grades at a test, she started a fire during cooking class, and she got hit badly by a guy who was playing with his friend. But the worst has yet to come. While riding down the steep road, her bicycle's breaks were not working. When she tried to stop in time so that she wouldn't hit the stopper, she failed and flew up high. She got hit by the upcoming train and died.
That is if she didn't want to turn back time. Yep, she turned back time and didn't get hit by the train. This movie is about her experiencing new things and also maturing bits and bits through the experiences she encountered by changing time. Also, from changing time and going back, again and again for her own benefit, she realised later that she was hurting others around her. She even almost caused Kousuke, one of her closest friends, his life. She would've killed him if not for....
THAT, you would have to discover yourself. :3. This movie was really amazing, and near the 3-quarter point of the show, a new plot device came out, and it's related to Chiaki. XD. I wouldn't want to spoil further, so I'll leave every other part of the story to you.
I would've cried if not for the jerkish scenes when she was jumping through time. Those were total mood killers! >.<. Ah, and also, both Kawaranai Mono and Garnet now have more meaning to me. Garnet was shown at the end as an ED, and since it was subbed by Shinsen-subs, they had the translation of the lyrics at the bottom, which I read while I listened to Garnet. It fitted really well with the movie, and it was quite melancholic + angsty in my opinion. Head over to
Gendou for the English lyrics. If I am not wrong, they were translated by atashi. Ah yes, and I also like the chemistry between Chiaki and Makoto. It is among the better ones I have seen.
I don't think I have any complaints with this movie, just that...
[SPOILER]
How is she going to meet Chiaki in the future?! щ(゚Д゚щ)
And so...here ends my thoughts on it, I guess. It's really an awesome show to boot, seriously. Oh, and about the graphics...they are actually quite good, for a movie made in the year 2006. The directors like to show the characters from afar, bringing the background in full-view, which was quite a unique touch. Oh oh, and um, this movie just made me like Madhouse studios more, which makes it my definite first favourite studio now~~ :3
