It almost sounds like your video card is having trouble, especially if your cursor was messed up but other things worked ok at the time. If it happens again, disable hardware video acceleration to see if it goes away. If it does, then it's your video card. I've had similar issues with an old 3DFX card.
But even if it's not the video card, the problems you describe seem to be related to the computer itself, not the monitor. (turning on/off might be out of sync signal\power saving mode initiated by computer, freezing\glitching sounds like a video card problem, etc)
