"You know, smoking is bad for your health."

I glanced towards the soft voice that called out to me; an elderly women stood there, dressed in a familiar floral printed dress as she held tightly onto the black grips of her metallic green walker. Sarah heaved a breath as she flicked the smoke onto the ground, crushing it with her foot, "We know. This is my first one in a while..." She muttered underneath her breath. I began to wonder why she had felt the need to defend herself to the old woman, she wasn't listening anyways, as she was speaking as well, dismissing my friend entirely.

"...you know I had a sister once, fifty three years old, she died from lung cancer, it makes me sad when I see young people like you smoke like that." She said in a shaky voice. Her eyes wavering back and forth as she took an equally shaky step forward. I watched her movements, and the way she gestured to the broken cigarette on the ground. Looking over at Sarah, I could tell she was thinking the same thing I was, that was my best friend for ya. She licked her dry lips as she leaned over to me to ask me something but it was too late.

"Miriam?" I said aloud. She paused and looked at me with such familiar eyes, I knew it had to be her. She took a step forward as she inclined her head towards us, "Miriam, is that you? It's me, Jinelle, your old neighbor!" I smiled at her sweetly as I gestured to myself. The woman looked at her with a confused expression, as if trying hard to remember who this girl was, "Yes, yes, my name is Miriam." She said simply.

Sarah glanced at me and then away in the opposite direction, knowing where this conversation was going to go. She'd been there before and it pained her incredibly to see an older person speak of the past of which they don't remember.

"You don't remember me?" I asked, "I'm Jinelle, you're old neighbor on Seventy-second street, I used to fix your VCR all the time? Sarah and I used to pick weeds in your garden for you?" I tried again as I nudged my friend who didn't bother to look over. Miriam smiled and nodded, "Oh, I see! You're Johanna's daughter, right?"

I grinned at her and nodded enthusiastically, "Yes! Yes, thats me, Jinelle! Wow, I can't believe it's you, I haven't seen you for three years! How is the home your staying in?" I asked. This was incredible. This woman had to be in atleast in her early nineties atleast. When was she born? 1918 or something, it was a long time, thats all I could remember.

Miriam smiled, "Oh, the home I'm in is nice, its hard for people to come visit though, the people at the home don't allow visitors but we always have the nicest group activities..." Pausing she smiled back at me, "So, how's your sister, Jinelle?"

Sarah hunched over arms wrapped around herself as she crossed her leg. I looked at her before looking back at Miriam, putting on the best smile I possibly could. "You... you really don't remember who I am..?" I asked slowly.

The elder lady shook her head before looking around, "No, I'm sorry, I can't remember.... but you really know me?" I nodded but couldn't say anything. How could I? Sarah got up and lifted her black purse under her shoulder, "Well, we have to go..." She muttered.

Miriam looked at her and smiled, "Well you two girls stop smoking,... you don't smoke, do you?" She said as she looked at me. I said a simple 'no' as I could see Sarah shake her head. I smoked alot more then she did, in fact, I chain smoke, but I couldn't tell her that...

"Well, it was very nice meeting you... again. Since you say you know me." She said with a dry laugh. I looked at her with a sad smile, "You seriously don't remember me?"

Shaking her head, I sighed as I shrugged, "Well it was nice seeing you, goodbye." I said softly before turning away, grabbing Sarah's arm as we began to walk away from the older woman.

"It was nice meeting you." She said again as she waved at us.

We walked away in silence, not knowing what to say to eachother. "That was sad." I said softly. Sarah nodded, "It's why I hate being human. It's too sad." She said in responce.

True story, the other day my friend and I were sitting together when her neighbor walked by us and she didn't recognize us at all. All of the story is true other then some slight changes in dialogue and the change of our names but... yeah. I took on the role of Sarah (that totally would've been my Canadian name lol) and... yeah. Well, hope you enjoyed.
