This article is a very good example of what we've been saying for years. There'll always be a way for criminals to get guns.
What they can't buy, they'll steal. If guns to be stolen dry up, they'll smuggle them in. If they can't smuggle them in, they'll make them themselves. The kind of draconian measures necessary to prevent them making them would probably result in a revolt by the citizens.
'Police allege the syndicate imported more than 200 Glock pistols from Germany.' That's one group, and they're probably using the word syndicate to make it sound like it's not just a bunch of everyday criminals, which it probably is. Meaning, any criminal with an ounce of brain cells could do this.
'But people familiar with the illegal gun trade say illegal firearms still get through.' Because, no matter how many you arrest, there will always be new people to fill the smuggling gap.
'It is believed that some of the illicit guns in Australia are manufactured locally. "They can be made from imported parts or manufactured - totally illegally of course - but that can be done," Mr Bannister said.' And the better the anti-smuggling efforts get, the more will be made locally.
