memes and more

I know I don't post on LJ very often, but I read through it all the time...mostly just the friends list. Mostly because LJ is part of my early morning, coffee mug clutched like an emergency flotation device, ritual. By the time I get through all my morning readings, I'm about late to be out the door and to work.
Well these last couple of weeks have been incredibly slow for us here in the A/C business. Weather's been just too damn perfect. Not to crazy hot that people are calling to fix their air conditioning and not nearly cold enough to need the furnace looked at...so...lots of free time like this morning. well not really...I've been going into the office anyway, but not this morning. SO....rather than bemoan my lack of finances for an entire journal post, I'm gonna jump into a couple of memes that I've had kicked my way via the LJ.

first meme is of a literary nature:

essentially, grab nearest book. turn to page 42 and type out the first seven complete sentences.

normally difficult because my computer desk is immediately next to my bookshelves. However, I have a couple of books sitting ON the desk that I am taking down to loan to a friend later today so....turning to page 42 of Haruki Murakami's South of the Border, West of the Sun:

I was the kind of person who could, using some plausible excuse, inflict on a person I cared for a wound that would never heal.
College transported me to as new town, where I tried, once more, to reinvent myself. Becoming someone new, I could correct the errors of my past. At first I was optimistic; I coud pull it off. But in the end, no matter where I went, I could never change. Over and over again I made the same mistake, hurt other people and hurt myself into the bargain.
Just after I turned twenty, this thought hit me: Maybe I've lost the chance to ever be a decent human being.

second meme: grab electronic music device...as in storage and play...not casio keyboard. set phasers to stun...er I mean selection to "utterly random" and post the first line of lyric for the first twenty songs that come up.  question....what if it is classical/instrumental? I guess skip it, right?

armed with trusty Creative Zen brick mp3 player and headphones....this could be awesome...or potentially embarassing.
I think people are supposed to guess at the songs...but I have a rather short friends list....so maybe I'll just list the artist and song...not right away but on my next no work in the morning day.

1. "Back with another one of those block rockin' beats!"    (HA! this could be a very easy quiz)

2."Electric blue eyes, where did you come from"

3. spoken word. skipped.  (for interest Johnny Depp reading Mad Road by Kerouac)
3b. instrumental Cowboy Junkies Instrumental 2
3c. "Yo, is Mos Def(X3) trying to keep it eye level..."

4. "Tears on the sleeve of a man, don't want to be a boy today."
hangingfire -  Tori Amos "Pretty Good Year"

5. "Did you think that I would laugh when you said I was small"

6. "I cant breathe and arrive with style."

7. "Words like violence, break the silence" (not the original, but absolutely one of my favorite covers ever.)
hangingfire - "Enjoy the Silence"  Depeche Mode but this was the Lacuna Coil cover that my mp3 player selected.

8. " I got a magical ray that reads you like a book, yeah."

9. "Sliding out of reverse into drive"

10. " She looks to the sun help her to carry on"

11. "Swing low sweet cherry make it awful"

12. Instrumental- Debussy's "Girl With Flaxen Hair" performed by Beijing Central Philharmonic
12b. "Seems like it was yesterday when I saw your face"

13. " Tristeza no fim, Felicidade sim"

14." You know what it feels like to be naked"

15. " If you recieve an email with a subject of 'bad times' delete it immediately without reading it."

16. "Chairs thrown and tables toppled, hands armed with broken bottles."

17. "You're clear out of this world"

18. "Let's kiss not fight, try to do what's right tonight"

19. techno instrumental by Dr. Hyatt
19b. " Take me down, 6 underground"
saltatoria -  "Six Underground" by Sneaker Pimps

20. " I'd like to see you in the morning...in the evening."

and there you have it.
woke up very early even though I didn't get to bed til late and I've been watching a really good documentary called God Grew Tired of Us
It's about the Lost Boys of Sudan that fled the violence and ended up in refugee camps in Kenya. In 2001/2002 the United States granted a number of the Sudanese refugees visas to come to the United States. They were broken up into smaller group and settled in different cities throughout the country. It's an amazing story and it's great to see them come to learn about all the tiny details of life that most of us take for granted (electric light and potato chips) as well as their take on some of the larger aspects of American life (the isolation and manic work schedule needed to maintain a subsitance). Really well done.

also just watched a ninja movie. also really good. of course it helps if you like subbed japanese ninja love stories.  I spose.
but it was well done.  billed as "x-men meets romeo in juliet" (eyeroll) meets ninja scroll meets crouching....you get the idea. anyway... the forbidden love storyline is probably a bit old (classic?) but the rest of the movie comes together well. aha! found a trailer. don't know why they included that song. it only appears in the closing credits. but anyhow...

and lastly...been playing with my new SLR a bit lately. not as much as I'd liked, but the most recent results are up on my Flickr.

 some recent favorites:

and that's it for this morning. :)

edit to add:
given hangingfire  has guessed on the music meme, I am reminded of another significant media consumption from the last two weeks. Given that I keep hearing about it through various superfan friends and its easy availability on Netflix to watch the episodes streaming...I've jumped into the most recent Dr. Who series, first season. I like it. I like it a lot. watched  The Empty Child and The Doctor Dances the other night. GREAT episiodes. Empty Child was super creepy.   think I'll go watch the next one.
