"Do you think it could have gone a different way?" he asks her, one night.
She turns to look at him, hair falling over her shoulders. "What?"
"I mean -" and here he pauses, because he has to separate his fear from his reality (because he has her, he has her, despite everything she chose him, wanted him). "Do you think there was a time we wouldn't have ended up together?"
She breathes, and reaches out to grip his hand tight. "No," she says with barely a moment's pause.
He raises an eyebrow. "Really?"
She kisses his shoulder, soft, and grins. "Yeah," and she kisses him properly, the way that she likes (more than a peck but not a real kiss; she likes to feel him breathing, press her hand against his heart and feel it speed up).
"Why?" he manages.
She rolls her eyes at him but turns over, so she's facing the wall, legs still entangled in his. She shrugs. "Been in love with you since I was little. Don't think anything could have overcome that."
He stares at her for so long that she looks at him, biting her lip. "Is that -"
He kisses her.
She grins against his lips and he whispers me too me too into the stillness between their mouths.
She falls asleep curled against him, hand pressed against his heart, and he watches her for a long time until sleep overcomes him, too.
Raw honesty. So powerful, and so true to character, too. How do you start to live/start again in a world where death is not a constant threat? Ron and Hermione are perfect here.
