Katniss & Peeta [+unnamed D12 tributes], When The Fall Is All That's Left
The girl is Prim's age. She's not Prim, but she's small and quiet and Katniss has this overwhelming urge to volunteer for her anyways. Instead she takes her hand and grips it tightly, pulls her in. "I'll teach you to fight," she promises, her lips against the girl's crown. "Do you want to fight?" The girl clutches her tighter and shakes her head. "That's okay. I'll teach you to survive instead."
The boy is a few years older, taller than Peeta but skinnier because he's from one of the families that rarely eats. The food on the train is too rich for him and he spends the first day of training throwing up. Peeta and Katniss take turns: one stays with him, rubbing his back and pretending he's not crying, the other keeps an eye on the girl and tries to rack up sponsor support.
It's Peeta, surprisingly, that rages in their Capitol penthouse when the commentators start laying odds. How weak, they say, District 12 looks this year. So different from last year. She has to pull him away, down to their room (their room because they're still the Star-Crossed Lovers), away from the ears of their Tributes, who look at him with resignation and fear when he starts yelling at the television.
When the Games start, Katniss closes her eyes. She won't watch them run to their deaths.
"Now we know why Haymitch drinks," Peeta whispers.
asdfghjkl;'asdfghjkl;' DUDE, THIS WAS GREAT! Great and soul-crushing, just the way I like my Hunger Games fic. Thank you so much for filling this; I loved it!!!
