hey. I was trying to show a friend the disability project video you had posted a while back and it isn't anymore. Do you have a different link to the video? Is it posted somewhere else? Thanks Lee!
(maybe you can talk some sense on the issue we were discussing)
"Hehe, sure. I really only have one question, but it's rather broadly interpreted and has a lot of room for discussion. Specifically, it's the subject of Ableism (or Disablism, depending on your ideology and environment). Because I've become somewhat more social of late, I've found myself mincing words to avoid offending anyone in any company. Often, my words come out much simpler than I intended because of potential connotations to an implied -ism. Sometimes, I'm at a loss for any appropriate alternative in speech and remain quiet when I have an otherwise poignant response or position. And I find myself wondering if we are, in fact, simply being over-sensitive? For instance, I found myself fumbling for a way to say "done in an impromptu and hurried fashion" without deferring to any of the colloquialisms I had grown up using. I never gave the whole concept much thought until someone criticized me for my use of the word "lame" referring to a dog that was missing a leg. The person essentially pointed out the negative connotations of the word and how it would offend those that were differently-abled, and how it was simply a symptom of Ableist elitism."
Thanks Lee!
