Do you happen to know if we're actually able to get to outer space under our own power, or does trying that result in a similar effect to when you try to leave the town on foot?

The rings issues by the Corps are multi-functional. They allow the projection of solid green energy constructs according to the strong will of the wielder. It takes an enormous amount of willpower to control them properly. They can also be used to produce force fields, move things telekinetically, and to fly. There are other lesser functions, but those are the main ones.

The ring chooses its bearer. It doesn't work the other way around.
