Recently I've been watching quite a number of Korean variety shows and somehow a thought that hasn't surfaced for quite some time occurred to me. It was about social stereotypes, more specifically on the behavioral stereotype of males and females.
Women have always been under the perception of being more docile creatures and less out-spoken than males are. This is something that not many people pay much attention to since it seems to have always been that way. But what happens when individuals start breaking out of that stereotype? Simple. They get slammed by the public.
If anyone watches enough Korean variety shows, they would know that some of the male hosts and guests are very well-known for having sharp tongues and sometimes insult people on shows, not to mention being witty at the same time. These people mainly being Kang Hodong, Kim Gura and Kim Heechul. When we watch them speak like they do, we all find it entertaining and even more so when they're up against each other.
That, however, is not the case with the females. An example will be Solbi. Solbi is very outspoken on shows and the kind that speaks her mind yet being funny at the same time. Just a few days ago I watched a Star King episode where Solbi was asking this unicyclist a question that it's often said that figure skaters are often said to have very ideal and slim figures, and then ask the unicyclist why does it seem that she doesn't fit into that category of ideal figures. Because of that one question, people have been making comments under that video, calling Solbi a bitch and what not.
But really, I think she's just voicing out the question in everyone's heads. It's a question that probably passed by the minds of every guests and audience minds when they're watching the performance. It's a question that I wouldn't put beyond Hodong, Kim Gura and even Heechul to ask and not get slammed for it. Why does Solbi asking it make it any different?
People call Solbi nasty names and say she's being rude when she speaks as she does, yet say that she's being witty and funny when she rebuts insults that are thrown her way. Gender aside, what is it about Solbi that makes it so different from the 3 males mentioned that she gets slammed yet the 3 guys get praised for comments of similar nature?
