My extended family in Alabama is a bunch of close-minded, right-wing, religiously intolerant bigots. There are exceptions within the family, but the majority fall into this category. It's a trait that has driven me crazy for years, and ultimately figured heavily in my moving across the country from them - less opportunities for my blood pressure to go up. :)
Unfortunately, they all have email now, and they all love to forward things. And they are all of the mindset that if they read it somewhere, it must be true. Period.
I received an email (forwarded to the entire family, of course) from my cousin today, which claimed that Barack Obama is a radical Wahabbist Muslim, educated in a madrassa in Indonesia, who has a secret campaign to "destroy the US from the inside out, what better way to start than at the highest level - through the President of the United States, one of their own!!!!"
This kind of @#&*^$#@ makes me crazy. My cousin didn't research it to see if a grain of truth was in it - he just forwarded it to our entire family. And of course, it's all a bunch of "bullhockey", to quite my Uncle Frank, another staunch right-wing email believer. Obama has an entire page about it on his site (
http://obama.senate.gov/press/070123-debunked_insigh/index.php )if you are interested in reading it. Snopes has a page on it too, as does CNN.
This kind of thing makes me so angry!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why doesn't my family have the brains to research a thing for themselves, instead of believing hate propaganda?
GRRRRRRRRR.....
