I am starting to understand the conversations that the Latina ladies at work have with the Spanish-speaking American guy on our shift. Not what they say to eachother, certainly, I can only pick out maybe 10% of that, but when they talk to him a little more slowly it's more like 50%, and sometimes I'll even understand the whole conversation if it's short and focused on vocab I know.
On Thursday Rosa even told me, in straight Spanish, to put something away, and I didn't even need her to repeat it! I was just like, oh, con los otros? And she was all pleased.
It's kind of the highlight of my workday. It's not a terribly intellectually stimulating job otherwise--put the bars in the boxes, over and over for ten hours. But having this other, extra project that I can play with even while I'm working makes it interesting and exciting.
And then Hassan speaks Somali AND Hindi. I'm especially excited about the Hindi, because I've made some decent progress with it alone already but never had the chance to SPEAK it before. And he's been pretty cool and open to talking about religion, which is kind of fascinating, and one day when we were stuck opening bad bars all day he gave me a brief history of the Somali civil war.
It's... so, so cool working with people from other parts of the world.
