Gah. This ended up being a little long. Sorry if this wasn't what you were expecting.

Leon was having a really good day, and it wasn't even 9 AM.

Yen Sid, the crotchety old geezer who was The Radiant Sun’s resident art critic, had finally announced his retirement at the age of seventy-something. (Being a journalist, Leon was supposed to be paying attention to details, but he honestly didn’t care that much.) The people that worked under him were hesitant to believe their good fortune, Leon being one of them.

He’d worked for three years as the apprentice, fetching him coffee, running back and forth between the old man’s office and the editors’ office, accompanying him to galleries and museums and exhibitions. (He’d even gone to three elementary school art classes once, and what a joy THAT had been. Luckily, the paint in his hair and clothing had turned out to be washable.) He had to admit, Yen Sid had an eye for fine art as well as up-and-coming talent, and when you combined that with his writing ability, the man was pretty close to a god. But Leon knew his weaknesses, and he also knew that the old dog was completely and stubbornly unwilling to learn new tricks. Not to mention that the guy was kind of an asshole. The thing with Leon was that he could be a stubborn bastard, so they griped at each other but generally worked pretty well.

“I don’t know how you do it,” one of the secretaries had said. “He’s so mean! None of the girls like him.”

“Everyone here at HR hates him,” one of the department heads had said, “and you know I’m telling you the truth because we’re not supposed to have personal opinions.”

So when he came in and there were three girls smiling at him as he turned towards the elevators, he smiled. He kept a small smile all the way to his cubicle, and laughed when he heard whispering coming from the flimsy walls. He walked in, happy and slightly suspicious at the same time.

“Surprise!” The members of the art team sprang up and threw their hands in the air. His friend Cloud, an art editor, clapped him on the back. “Congrats, Leon! You’re taking the old guy’s place in the paper.” He gestured to the now-empty cubicle. “We went ahead and dumped your stuff into your new office. Wanna go take a look?”

Leon was grinning ear-to-ear now. “Hell yeah!”

An hour later, Leon’s stuff was completely put away in his office. He propped his feet up on his desk and crossed his arms, feeling pretty damn satisfied. Ruining the moment, one of the little twin secretaries-Kairi or Namine, he couldn’t remember which hair color was which-popped in, smiling. “Leon? Here’s your mail. You’ve got a note from Cloud, too.”

“Thank you.” He accepted the armful of things, bringing them over and placing them in a pile. Cloud’s note was on top.

Leon-congratulations again. We’ve been waiting for that old geezer to retire so we can put some new talent in there. I’m fully confident that you’ll knock people’s socks off.

As I’m sure you already know, we’ll want you to write an article introducing yourself. You know the drill and about how much space you’ve got. We can stick that in a special edition this Sunday, so get that on my desk ASAP, please. Tomorrow afternoon at the latest. Then you’ll want to start on next Sunday’s piece.

Just a suggestion of what I’d like to see-try to go out of bounds a little, really shake things up. I know Yen Sid didn’t go to many localized galleries, so maybe a stop to Destiny? I’ve heard they have a new photographer there that’s supposed to be really good.

And just so you don’t forget I’m your best friend in addition to your editor, I’ve been before. The photography’s nice, but the photographer looks like your type.

Leon scowled and rolled his eyes before returning to the note.

Now, now, I know you’re giving me that look. Let’s face it, Leonhart, it’s been too long since you’ve gotten laid. You need to fix that. At least get a date and an article out of it, okay?

--Cloud (who is thrilled to be editing your stuff)

He crumpled the note up into a ball and threw it into the trash can, chuckling in spite of himself. Cloud always was an intrusive, nosy bastard. But he’d type his introductory up and go tomorrow. At least it was free subject material.

There was another note and a stapled paper on his desk when he came in the next morning.

I see you like your new office. Thanks for the prompt intro. I’m returning it with minor changes/suggestions. Back on my desk before you take that lunch break, all right?

Got a couple new hotspots for you, as well as a thriving internet site-something Yen Sid didn’t want to cover. I think we should. I put the places in the bottom margin of your article.

You going to see Sora (cute photographer I told you about) soon?

--Cloud

Leon laughed as he wrote a reply. He made the corrections within the hour and brought the note to the blond, along with a thank-you cup of coffee. When he looked up in surprise, Leon pointed to the note.

Yes, I do like my office. Sweet victory.

They all look good to me. I’ll see if I can scope one of them out later this week. Thanks.

And yes, I am. Wipe that smirk off your face right now.

P.S. Where do you keep getting all of these places?

Cloud chuckled as he read over the note. He looked up at Leon, grinning. “I’m dating a guy who’s best friends with Sora. Sora’s constantly on the lookout for new stuff, and when Riku mentioned to him that I was an art editor for the Sun, they started giving me some of the better places.”

“I…” Leon began, but Cloud cut him off. “Don’t even give me that, Leonhart. Sora’s nice, and you could use a steady boyfriend. A photographer boyfriend’s even better. Don’t screw this up.” He looked at Leon meaningfully. “And cut the relationship-phobia crap. You’re not; you just haven’t found anybody you really like yet.”

Leon glared at him. “What I was going to say before you so rudely interrupted was that I was thinking about heading over there today. It’s a pretty short subway ride.”

Cloud smirked, propping his chin on his hands and looking like Leon’s high school girlfriend Rinoa when she wanted him to buy her something. “Good. Call and tell me how it goes, alright?”

Leon turned to leave, pausing at the door. “Fine. See if I bring you any souvenirs. Gossipy old hag.”

Cloud laughed. “Go on, you. I don’t want any souvenirs except stories, juicy or news-related.”

After a quick stop to his apartment and a change into cooler clothing, Leon was off. The subway ride was rather uneventful, but Leon had his notepad nonetheless, keeping track of the subway time. He could start with something like “After a 57-minute subway ride and a quick hop in a taxi, three blocks off of the main street in Destiny…” or “An hour and fifteen minutes from the heart of Radiant Garden…”. He jotted it down on his notepad and tucked the pen behind his ear, trying to block out the noisy kid a few seats down from him. The doors opened every so often, pinging and announcing the stop. He was about twenty minutes from arriving when a brunette man stopped in front of him. “Can I sit here?” Leon nodded, wondering why he was asking, and the other man sat down next to him.

They sat in silence for a few minutes, the brunette tapping his foot in some kind of beat. Leon doodled on the corner of his notepad, glancing out the grimy window at the scenery every so often. It was a pretty day-blue sky, white clouds. The trees were green and the sun, as far as he could tell, was bright.

“So, where you headed?” Leon jumped, surprised at the man’s voice, and turned to look at the man sitting next to him. He was smiling brightly, bright blue eyes lit up with curiosity. Leon tried to hide a responding smile and failed-this guy looked like a kid in a candy shop.

“Did your mother ever tell you not to talk to strangers?” Leon said, still wearing a lopsided smile.

“Well, yeah,” the man said. “But I’m Sora. So now we’re not strangers. I’m going home.” He couldn’t have been older than twenty, but-wait. Sora. Hadn’t Cloud said…?

“You wouldn’t happen to be Sora Katou, would you?” Sora looked at him in surprise, and Leon knew he was right. “My friend Cloud told me about your gallery. I’m actually on my way to see it. He recommended it to me through Riku, apparently-I’m the new art critic from the Radiant Sun.” He extended his hand. “Leon Leonhart. At your service.”

Sora laughed and shook his hand heartily. “Well, I guess I’ll just have to join you!”

“Sorry for the inconvenience. If you needed to go home, don’t let me stop you,” Leon said apologetically. “I came out because I was looking for a Sunday scoop, so…I’ve got time.”

“No, it’s no trouble at all! I’m grateful that you took the time to come out and see my stuff.” Sora shrugged. “I like my recent shots a lot, but I’ve been having trouble getting an audience on a low budget. Riku said his boyfriend might be able to help out, so…” Sora grinned, eyes crinkling at the corners. “I’m really happy.”

Funny, he seems young, but he’s pretty self-confident. Not cocky, just…sure. Like he knows his skills and where he wants to be. Leon smiled. “I’m looking forward to it.”

The rest of the subway trip passed quickly. Leon found himself easily opening up to Sora, something almost no one brought out of him. Certainly not a near-stranger, and an attractive stranger who was around his age…this was getting better by the minute. More than once, he thought he could hear Cloud laughing at him. As it turned out, a taxi was completely unnecessary-Sora’s gallery was located on the upstairs floor of a small jewelry shop.

“They were dying to sell the space,” Sora explained, “so they gave it to me for a really low price. I had to fix it up a bit-there was a lot of repair that they needed done, and they’re an older couple, so they either had to pay someone to do it or sell it. I jumped at the chance.” He unlocked the door with a small key hanging on a cord around his neck, and they walked inside.

The interior was nice. A rug was spread out on the floor, covering the hardwood. The walls were a pale cream, a stark contrast to the many black frames hanging on the walls. “I kind of sort them by emotion,” Sora said. “The ones on this wall,” he said, pointing to the right wall with the street-facing windows, “are all the tranquil pictures. To the left are the really happy or silly pictures. The center wall is sad pictures.”

Leon walked up to a picture, choosing at random from the ‘tranquil’ side. They seemed to mostly be black-and-white, with a few splashes of color photographs thrown in. There was a picture of white sheets blowing in the breeze on a clothesline, and next to that was a woman asleep under a cherry blossom tree in full bloom. The places and times of day seemed to be completely random, but what all of the things had in common was the poignant emotion. He moved to the left, facing the sad photos. There was a grave with a bouquet of wilted flowers, an abandoned church with broken pews, and an ice cream, melting on the sidewalk. A tow truck, tugging a wrecked car out of the ocean. A woman sobbing, her husband’s arm around her, crying around a tiny coffin.

Sora came up behind him, surprising him. “I cried while I was taking that one. Imagine, waiting months for a life that was never going to really start, you know?” He smiled sadly. “I asked if it was okay, and they said it would be the perfect way to remember.”

Leon looked at him, vaguely awe-inspired. “Sora, these are beautiful pictures.”

Sora chuckled. “You didn’t even look at the happy ones yet. C’mere, some of these are really good.” He grabbed Leon’s hand, tugging him to the third wall.

He grabbed Leon’s hand, tugging him to the third wall. He pointed to a picture of a dog, looking sheepish, at an angry white duck. It looked like the duck was pointing his wing like an index finger. Leon laughed.

“He looked pretty pissed off.”

“You have no idea,” Sora said, chuckling. “I was thinking the dog ate his bread crumbs or something. Ducks are touchy when it comes to food.”

“Hn,” Leon muttered, rubbing his chin and moving to the next one. There was a ceiling fan in color, and it looked like it was spinning a rainbow circle. “Wow.” Leon glanced at the caption. “Shrugging Off A Rainbow.” He looked at Sora, curious. “How’d you do that one?”

He grinned. “It was really hard to get the shot. A couple of friends came over and helped me. We stuck colored headbands on the end of the fan and waited until they flew off. I promised them it would be really cool. It took us hours, and we got hit in the head a lot.”

“There’s a way to spend an afternoon.”

“Yeah, they were kinda mad at me later. I brought them ice cream before they forgave me.”

Leon turned again, facing the fourth wall. “What’s this one?”

Sora smiled. “My favorite. Look, and see if you can guess.”

Leon obliged, moving to the first picture. There was a young girl, sitting on a worn couch. Her nose was in a book, but her eyes were glancing at the boy next to her, who was also reading. There was an ill-disguised sense of longing there, and Leon suddenly felt as if he was intruding on a private moment. He continued, scrolling down the wall. A couple on a park bench. A ribbon-wrapped box of chocolates. An airplane making a “Marry me?” exhaust fume. He continued to the second-to-last frame, gasping when he recognized one of the subjects.

He turned to Sora. “Is that…?”

Sora beamed. “Yup! That’s Cloud and Riku. Riku’s the silver-haired one on the left, and of course you already know Cloud.”

They were walking down the street, fingers laced together. People seemed to be moving around them, but they were perfectly still, as if they were the only two in the world.

“I’ll bet they love this one.”

“Yeah. They were embarrassed when I first showed it to them, but now they’re really happy I took it.”

Leon smiled to himself, moving to the last frame. He was surprised when it was empty, and turned to Sora. “A statement, or…?” Sora blushed, shaking his head, and Leon looked at him quizzically.

“I know what shot I want to go there, but I haven’t really gotten the opportunity yet.” Sora looked at him pointedly, as if that would be the end of the question, and Leon decided to drop it.

“So. What do you think?”

Leon toyed with the idea of teasing him, but decided to be sincere. “Amazing. There wasn’t a single one I didn’t like.”

Sora beamed. “Good. I’m glad.” The wide, open smile, caught Leon off-guard, and he realized that he could be really attracted to the young photographer.

“So,” Leon began, clearing his throat awkwardly. “Erm, maybe I could take you out for a late lunch or something? My treat.” He hurriedly followed it up with, “You know, for an interview.”

He thought he caught a flash of disappointment on Sora’s face, but it was quickly washed away. “Did you have a place in mind?”

Leon shook his head. “Wherever you want is fine with me; I’m not really familiar with the restaurants around here.”

“There’s a great seafood place right around the corner, if you want to walk.”

“Formal or informal?” Leon asked, deciding to take a chance.

“Informal…most everything is around here.” Leon looked sort of dejected, and Sora cocked his head at him, confused. “Wait, are you asking me out?”

Leon looked even more confused than Sora. “Yeah, I think I am. Am I?”

Sora blushed. “I was kind of hoping you would.”

Leon smiled. “That settles it, then.” Taking another chance, he reached over and took Sora’s hand in his. “Shall we go?”

“Yeah.” They left the jewelry shop, both content to walk in silence, before Sora spoke up again. “Usually when you ask someone out, you ask them if they want to make it a date first.”

Leon chuckled. “I’ll keep that in mind next time.”

Lunch passed quickly, both chatting amiably. Occasionally Leon would jot something down on his notepad, but mostly they just talked, as if they’d known each other for years. They swapped stories (“Did Cloud ever tell you about the time he wore a dress?” “I used to have a dog named Pluto,”), enjoying each other’s company. After they ate, Leon paid, and they left the restaurant.

“So,” Sora started. They were awkwardly standing on the sidewalk outside of the resturant, neither wanting to leave.

“So.”

Sora tried again. “Is this where I invite you home? I don’t really have anything else to do for the day, so if you wanted to…we could watch a movie or something.”

Leon smiled. “That sounds great. Your house is a few blocks from here, right?” Sora nodded. Acting on impulse, Leon wrapped an arm around Sora’s waist, pulling him closer and lacing their fingers together. “Let’s walk slow.”

Sora blushed, but was grinning widely. “We could stop off at the beach if you wanted to. The sun’ll set pretty soon.”

“Even better.”

They ambled down the sidewalk, Leon taking in the scenery and Sora giving out occasional directions. Finally, they came across a side street with rows of small, picturesque houses. “This is my street right here. Turn left and we can walk on the beach for the rest of the way.”

“Okay,” Leon replied, steering them in that direction. “You know, this is going to sound really cheesy and horribly cliché, but I feel like we know each other really well.”

Sora shook his head violently. “No, I know exactly what you mean! It’s like, we’re strangers, but we aren’t. …Did that make any sense at all?”

“No, but let’s go with it anyway.” They took off their shoes and socks, reluctantly letting go of each other, and then walked along the shoreline. The water was comfortably warm, and the air was fresh. A flock of seagulls came into view, and Sora ran after them like a five-year-old, flapping his arms and laughing hysterically. Leon chuckled, shaking his head as Sora came jogging back to him.

“Sorry. I always do that,” Sora explained. “The more they avoid you, the less they poop on you.”

Leon laughed. “Sora Katou: Striking Fear into the Hearts of Seagulls Everywhere. I like it.”

Sora pouted, and he looked so damn adorable that Leon leaned in a little on instinct. “Sora?” Big, ocean-blue eyes turned up to face him. “Can I…kiss you?”

Sora smiled. “I thought you’d never ask.”

That was all the prompting Leon needed, and he gently pressed his lips to Sora’s. He intended it to be chaste, not really sure how far Sora wanted this to go, but the spiky-haired man was the one who deepened the kiss, licking at Leon’s bottom lip and delving into his mouth. Leon wrapped his arms around Sora’s shoulders, pulling him closer until their groins touched.

“What do you say,” Sora said, punctuating this with a roll of his hips, “to finding out what Sex on the Beach candles should really smell like?”

“Ngh…got any lube on you?”

“We could just…uh, use the water.”

It was hard to look skeptical while aroused, but Leon managed. “Won’t that hurt?”

Sora shook his head and tugged at Leon’s shirt meaningfully. “Off.”

Somehow, that one word woke Leon up. Their clothes went flying up the beach into the dry sand, and he laid Sora in the water. Sora shivered, his nipples getting harder, and Leon nipped them lightly. He moved up to Sora’s neck, leaving a love bite, and ran his fingers lightly down Sora’s sides. Sora squirmed underneath him, making a noise that fell somewhere between a giggle and a sigh, and then Leon’s mouth was moving lower, lower, and oh god didn’t that feel nice. Leon’s mouth was around him and he was pushing his knees up to his chest, and Sora obediently held them, knowing that he would probably walk home funny. He didn’t really care, because it was really close and he was really close and he really didn’t want Leon to stop. He vaguely noticed a pair of wet, cool fingers inside of him, stretching his entrance. Then there were three, and it would have hurt but Leon’s mouth felt so good that everything else came in second. Then Leon’s fingers found his prostate, and all of it was white noise. He clenched involuntarily, and he heard himself whine as the delicious fingers were gone. Leon removed his mouth and replaced the fingers with his cock, and Sora felt warm all over.

“You okay?” Leon asked, and he nodded and clutched at Leon’s hips, forcing his cock a little deeper inside. He felt Leon moan, and he smiled, because what else could he do? And then Leon was thrusting, pushing and pulling, and then he hit that glorious spot again and again and Sora was tingly and clenching and coming fast, spraying their stomachs. He was in a blissful daze, then, and his world felt so good. He felt Leon give a few more shallow thrusts before he came, still inside of Sora, and it dripped down his thighs as the cool water of the ocean washed it away.

They laid together, breathing and recovering and still feeling like one person rather than two. Then Leon pulled out gently, rolling over and taking Sora with him, coaxing the younger man to lay his head on his chest. Sora tilted his chin so he could look at Leon’s face, and Leon’s face was so at peace, looking at him with an intense emotion he’d never seen before. Well, he’d seen it before. Riku constantly looked like that when he was thinking about Cloud. Just never directed at him.

Sora’s brain had room left for one coherent thought. Get a picture. This might not last forever.

“Hey, Leon?” His voice cracked on the last syllable a bit.

Leon smiled at him, still wearing that same relaxed expression on his face. It managed to be dopey and utterly endearing at the same time. “Mm?”

Sora blushed, looking down and tracing patterns on Leon’s chest. “Can I…take a picture of you?”

“Okay,” Leon said. No questions asked, just okay. Sora suddenly felt like a weight had been lifted off his chest.

“Don’t move. Keep relaxing, fall asleep if you have to, just don’t move a muscle,” Sora babbled, standing up gingerly and limp-running for his pants. He pulled out his digital camera and shuffled back to Leon.

“Should I smile?” Leon asked, eyes half-lidded.

“No,” Sora whispered. “Stay just how you are.”

He clicked the shutter several times, tinkering with the lighting and angle for each shot a bit. Satisfied that he had taken enough, he set the camera down next to him and returned to Leon’s arms.

“Do I need to know?”

“No, not really. Thanks,” Sora said, half-smiling into the fading sunlight.

The next morning at work, there was another suspicious note on his desk. He opened it with some curiousity, wondering what Cloud could possibly want from him. He’d turned in the Sora article last night, so he’d probably already read through it.

Leon-

Kairi and Namine both say you’ve been sighing and smiling all morning. Stop it. You’re freaking people out.

I liked the article. A few minor edits, but no large changes. Nice work, as usual. It’ll be ready for next Sunday.

By the way, I received an interesting call from my boyfriend. He went out to Sora’s gallery with him this morning-Riku’s older brother runs Yazoo Jewelers, and needed help opening the place. So Riku went upstairs and found something out of the ordinary.

Apparently, the last picture frame Sora was saving-well, he filled it with a picture he took yesterday. Riku said he was babbling something about the beach and decided to give me a call.

Leon’s eyes widened. He stuffed the note in his jacket and sprinted down the hallway to Cloud’s office (apologizing to the people he nearly mauled in the process). Cloud looked up when he burst in.

“Well, you sure make an entrance,” Cloud quipped, smirking at him. Leon didn’t care.

“Cloud, I need to go. I’m really sorr-”

Cloud laughed. “Wait a second.” He pressed something into Leon’s hand. Leon looked down. It was a subway fare card.

“How did you…”

“You think I didn’t put two and two together, Leon?” Cloud smiled. “Go on, now. Sora’s waiting for you.”

Leon grinned. “Thanks!” he yelled, as he ran out the door towards the subway.
