2009 Belmont Stakes
Well now, congratulations to Summer Bird for his upset victory in today's Belmont Stakes!
Dunkirk turned in a surprisingly good run (on the lead, of all places) to defeat the favorite, Mine That Bird, by a neck for second. Mine That Bird finished in third. I will say, I thought Mine That Bird might have had it at the top of the stretch, but Dunkirk fought back and just outfinished him... and then came Summer Bird, flying down the stretch on the outside. Good race!
Interestingly, both Summer Bird and Mine That Bird are sons of 2004 Belmont Stakes winner Birdstone. I'd say Birdstone has enjoyed considerable success as a sire in this year's Triple Crown races, wouldn't you?
