Chapter Title: Revelations

Edward smiled brightly at Jim Gordon who frowned as he walked into the police station. It took great pains for Edward to admit it but Jim Gordon was a good man. Sure, Edward absolutely hated him for all those times he helped foil his plots and arrested him, but it also became apparent that Jim Gordon actually cared. He actually gave a damn about this city and its people. He even seemed like he really cared if he and the other Arkham inmates recovered, which is why he also endlessly frustrated Edward.

Before he was the Riddler, Edward was a nobody, he worked as tech support guy for a large department store that sold technology. He worked from nine to five went back to his apartment, drank, watched games shows, and solved puzzles. Edward was always endlessly frustrated with the lack of intellect in the world. He was bored, with everything, plain and simple-until Batman came around.

Edward was obsessed with Batman. He was ashamed to admit it but he was. The man endlessly fascinated him. He grew up hearing stories of Superman from people in Metropolis, and as a local of Gotham, Edward had also been jealous of the city’s hero. Didn’t Gotham deserve her own hero?

That was the first question that plagued Edward, then the Batman showed up and Edward couldn’t suppress his glee, he needed to learn everything about the man. He noticed the simple things no one else did, whether it was that Batman changed his suit, or the fact that a Wayne Industries employee claimed to know the Batman’s identity, and that Bruce Wayne accidentally saved said employee.

But when Batman was blamed for the murder of Harvey Dent and others, Edward may have lost it a little, he could admit that now. Gotham’s hero a murderer-it didn’t make any sense. It was like nearly completing a puzzle, but then realizing that the last couple pieces came from an entirely different puzzle. It didn’t fit. Edward didn’t like things that didn’t fit. He solved puzzles and he solved the Batman puzzle. When Edward uncovered that Harvey Dent was the real murderer he brought the evidence to Gordon. Who completely ignore it! Edward tried going to the papers only to discover that Bruce Wayne paid the papers not to write the story! Edward decided then to make sure people paid attention to what he had to say. He drew the Batman out, tried to get him to admit the truth-AND HE WOULDN’T DO IT! It was then that Edward realized that he was clearly the only intelligent person in the world and possibly the universe, and became the Riddler, but Batman defeated him, and what happen after? Gordon arrested him! The very man who could’ve prevent all his trauma in the first place.

Of course, Dr. Adams constantly reminded him that his actions really weren’t Gordon’s fault, but despite being declared sane, he still had to disagree with her on that issue. Especially since he couldn’t tell her the whole story. Yes, he had many of his own problems, but this certainly wasn’t entirely his fault. He was too smart for that.

Edward took a deep breath, tried to stay calm and walked up to Gordon’s desk. “Hello, there Jim. I was sad you didn’t come to my coming out party… Oh my God, I really just said that didn’t I?”

Edward took another deep breath he needed to calm down. Between the Superdork, the Bat, and the Assassin Butler,
Edward was having a tough couple of days and it was making him talk crazy. Thankfully, Gordon ignored his extreme foot in mouth moment.

“What are you doing here, Nigma?”

“I’ve been hired by Mr. Pennyworth to prove his employer innocent. I’ll need to examine the evidence you collected and the statements from the witnesses.”

Gordon frowned. It was clear that while the Commissioner hoped Edward had really reformed he didn’t quite believe it either, nor did he really want Edward involved in any aspect of law enforcement, but he didn’t exactly have a choice in this instance.

For hours, Edward poured over the witness statements and the evidence, but if Edward didn’t know for a fact that Bruce Wayne wasn’t even present at the time of the murderers he would think he was incredibly guilty. The statements by witnesses, the video footage from the security cameras, and the finger prints on the gun all screamed Bruce Wayne. The devil, however, is in the details as the old saying goes and the devil was certainly present in the evidence piled up before Edward.

First, there was the Bruce Wayne he viewed in the video footage. To the untrained eye that man was Bruce Wayne down to the very last detail, but it was too over done. He couldn’t use it as real evidence without exposing Bruce’s identity as the Batman, but it was very clear that the man playing Bruce Wayne believed the persona the Bruce showed the world. He even seemed to be over acting slightly and the murder itself was so poorly planned that most people would believe Brucie Wayne planned it, but to Edward it was obvious that no matter how good the copy, this was not the original Bruce Wayne.
Which lead to the interesting problem of the fingerprint on the gun that clearly matched Wayne’s own.
Riddle me this, who has access to Bruce Wayne’s fingerprints and how would they put them on the gun without leaving any of their own behind? Perhaps the evidence was tampered with afterward.

Hmmm….

Edward stared at the mystery gun for a long time. He wasn’t sure how long he sat there in the police station staring at the gun when he finally noticed it. Edward grabbed a small vial and a small metal tool and scrapped it over the groves on the handle of the gun. Dirt fell out of the small groves and into small vial. On closer examination, Edward was able to determine that it wasn’t just any old dirt but more specifically clay, and since he knew that Wayne wasn’t exactly digging in the dirt or taking a pottery class, Edward considered it a significant lead.

Gotham City, East End, on the roof of Edward Nigma’s Apartment Building

Bruce landed near silently on the roof. He shouldn’t even be here. He should be conducting his own investigation. Except that he had only very limited ways of getting in contact with Gordon since he had taken the blame for Harvey’s murders. Furthermore, he was sure Batman inquiring after something as smalltime as Bruce Wayne killing someone would raise some of Gordon’s suspicions, and Bruce had enough people and aliens knowing his identity as it was.

Bruce groaned. Nigma better show up. He needed this matter to be solved quickly so that he could deal with the alien in his midst, the one that knew who he was, not that Bruce didn’t have leverage, but the whole situation was just unsettling. Just when Bruce was thinking that things couldn’t really get any worse he was kicked in the back and knocked to the ground.

Selina was on top of him then, straddling his waist, and practically purring in his ear. “Are you lost little Bat?’

“Catwoman, no.”

“Then what are you doing here? The East End is my territory.”

“You don’t own this city.”

Catwoman frowned and wrapped a clawed hand around his throat. “Oh, but I suppose the city does belong to you.”

“The fuck!?”

Bruce pushed Selina off him to see Edward standing by the door to the roof.

“The fuck!?” Edward screamed again and marched toward Bruce pointing an accusing finger at him. “You ignorant playboy son of a bitch! Deal’s off! I’ll return the money to your butler!”

“Playboy? Butler?” Selina sent an accusing glance toward Batman.

“Nigma,” Batman growled in warning.

“I was only really doing this Jonathan anyway, but considering the circumstances I think I speak for him when I say-you can rot in hell!”

“Wait, Crane? Bruce?” Selina was looking at him with full on fury now. Bruce sparred her a quick glance before turning an angry glare on Edward.

“Nigma, shut up!”

“Oh no, I think its time for me to finally speak up! After all, I’m doing my civil duty by turning your sorry ass in!”

“All that talk about Batman telling you my identity,” Selina yelled at Bruce. “You bastard!”

“My only regret,” continued Nigma, “is anything that happens to you after this point is no where near as bad as what this whole situation is going to do to Jonathan! Hell, maybe I should just kill you!”

“You’ll have to get in line, Nigma,” Selina hissed.

“No one is killing anyone,” said a voice behind Bruce. He closed his eyes. It couldn’t be. His luck wasn’t that bad. Except that apparently it was, because when Bruce turned around there was Superman. This guy really needed to mind his own business.

Edward started laughing. “He’s helping you now! What are you sleeping with him too?”

“No,” Bruce yelled.

“Inappropriate,” Superman screamed and looked around awkwardly his country manners becoming more apparent the more Bruce was around him.

“Nigma, I’m not sleeping with anyone,” Bruce growled. It struck him how incredibly true that statement was and he couldn’t help but wish that Jonathan would be released soon.

“Then what the fuck were you doing just now with Selina,” Edward asked crossing his arms.

“You told him who I was!” Selina snapped at Bruce.

“Wait the Selina Kyle, you’re Catwoman?” Superman looked between Bruce and Selina. “Do you always date criminals?”

“It seems to be his type,” Selina said.

“Answer my question, Bat!” Edward snapped.

“Bruce, did you tell him who I was.”

“I think we all need to calm down.”

“Everyone shut up,” Batman growled in his nastiest voice. The one designed to haunt the nightmares of Arkham’s worst inmates. “Selina jumped me, not that it’s any of your business, but I haven’t been with anyone since Jonathan and I became official. And no, Selina, I did not tell Nigma your identity. He just figured it out. And you,” Batman rounded on Superman, “What are you doing here?”

“I told you I wanted to help,” Superman snapped clearly offended now. His eyes flashed red for a moment before settling back to their usual unnaturally bright blue.

“Oh now you want to help. Go back to looking for your planet, alien.”

Superman flew into the air, crossed his arms, floated across the roof, and land directly in front of Bruce. “I get it. Your pissed, but I’m back now. I’m here to help whether you like it or not, so you might as well work with me.”

“I’ll make you leave.”

“I’m not easily moved.”

“Can you boys wait until later to whip them out and see whose is bigger or do you not care about the evidence I found?” Edward said with a roll of his eyes.

“What did you find,” Bruce demanded.

“Clay.”

“Clay?”

“On the handle of the gun. Our culprit is either a possible gardener or potter, and they have access to your fingerprints, because those are your prints on the gun. Oh, and are you right or left handed?”

“Left.”

Nigma smiled. “Our imposter shot with his right hand and he clearly seems to believe the Brucie persona so it’s not someone who knows you all that well, but he also has your fingerprints so he’s more than a stranger.”

Bruce nodded but said nothing. Edward continued. “Why him?”

“Why who?”

Edward sighed and desperately tried to will the people around him to be smarter. “Why Richard Daniels?”
Batman looked thoughtful for a moment before he spoke. “Richard Daniels was about to accept money from the Maroni family. Bruce Wayne clearly felt the money was being laundered and put a stop to it.”

Edward nodded. “Then I suggest-”

“We look into any one around Maroni who recently had some severe plastic surgery done and has a connection to Bruce Wayne,” Bruce finished.

“Maroni’s men wouldn’t exactly be planting rose bushes or taking art classes though,” Superman added.

Edward rubbed his chin. “Where does the clay fit?”

Selina scoffed. “You boys are missing the real question.”

Edward laughed. “I don’t miss things, sweetie.”

“Don’t sweetie me, ass! And you are missing something. People think Batman killed Sal’s driver and nearly killed him. Every criminal and psycho out there thinks the Batman is watching the Maroni family and won’t deal with them. Maroni’s been broke for years now because no one will work with him. Where did this money come from in the first place?”

Bruce nodded. “I’ll look into it.” He turned to jump off the roof when Selina called out to him.

“Wait! What are you going to do?”

“What I have to,” Bruce responded before disappearing into the night.

Edward groaned. “Idiot. I’m going bed. You’re welcome to join me Miss Kyle.”

“Go to hell, Nigma.”

“Oh well, if you ever get tired of drooling after the Bat look me up.” Edward opened the door to head back to his apartment. Jonathan was going to really owe him for this.

“I’m sure he was just… being crude,” Superman finished lamely to Selina unable to find a way to make what Edward said seem any politer.

“Its fine. I’m used to scandalous men as you can plainly see.” Selina quietly fumed, hating Bruce for the way he manipulated her.

“I’m afraid I’m going to have to arrest you though Miss Kyle,” Superman said this almost apologetically. Selina smiled at him.

“Well, go ahead then, but be warned when I get there I’ll tell the police that the great Superman is aiding the wanted criminal Batman who also happens to be the murder Bruce Wayne.”

“You won’t, Bruce is your friend.”

“Bruce has been lying to me and manipulating me for years now. I owe him nothing.”

Superman frowned but made no move to grab Selina or argue with her again. She smiled. “That’s what I thought. Your hands are dirty with Gotham dirt now wonder boy. Welcome to the club.”

Selina smirk before diving off the roof in much the same way Batman did but with much more of a flourish.

Superman sighed. Gotham was a strange city.
