Chapter Title: Bang, Bang, You’re Dead

There was a storm brewing outside, Scarecrow could hear it plain as day, and the pounding rain would have been enough to mask the soft careful foot steps on the roof if Scarecrow didn’t know those foot steps so well. Images of bare feet padding softly down a carpeted dormitory hallway sprung to his mine, but Scarecrow quickly pushed them down. Jonathan wasn’t needed right now.

Scarecrow smiled as he heard those steps scaling down the fire escape. Wiz sat on the couch watching TV, completely oblivious to the events that were about to take place. Outside the storm grew worse, but inside it was calm.

“Wiz.”

“Yeah, Scarecrow.” Wiz didn’t look up from the TV but Scarecrow’s focus wasn’t really on him anyway, so he supposed he could forgive the young thug for his inattentiveness.

“Can you please call Killer Croc and inform him that we have company.”

Wiz pulled out his phone. That was one thing that Scarecrow liked about him, he didn’t ask questions, simply followed orders. Scarecrow could see quickly why Croc kept him around.

The phone rang, and rang, and Scarecrow watched the window, waiting for the flourish of a cape.

“Hey, tell Croc that Scarecrow says, we have- aargh!” A batarang flew across the room cutting Wiz’s hand and spearing the phone into the wall.

Scarecrow stared at the phone then turned around to face the opposite window he’d been staring at. Batman was still too good at sneaking up on him it seemed. Scarecrow frowned and Wiz pulled out his gun.

“Oh, hell.” He fired. Batman dodged then leapt at Wiz knocking the gun from his hand. The two started struggling and fighting each other, but Scarecrow knew that Wiz would ultimately lose. He was smaller than the Bat after all, and wasn’t wearing armor. Scarecrow smiled as he spotted the gun that had skittered across the floor.

How careless of the Bat, to leave such weapons around, tempting the lunatic in the room. Scarecrow stared at the Bat Man then stared back at the gun. Of course, I’m not the only lunatic in the room.

Scarecrow walked slowly across the room. Wiz had pulled out a knife and was attempting to find the vulnerable points in Batman’s armor, but Scarecrow thought that it must be hard to think where to stick a knife with Batman pounding his head into the floor. Scarecrow picked up the gun and pointed it at Batman.

“Bang,” He screamed. Batman looked up at him apparently startled.

“Jon, you don’t have to-”

“You’re dead.” Scarecrow finished and Wiz finally managed to stab the Bat in his thigh.

Batman screamed, grabbing Wiz by the shoulders and tossing him across the room mashing all of Scarecrow’s lab equipment.

“That was rude.”

Batman stepped closer and Scarecrow raised the gun again.

“I think I’m going to kill you.” Scarecrow frowned at his words. Think, there was no think, he was going to, most definitely and without hesitation. Scarecrow gulped, any minute now and he would do it.

“Jon.”

“Not my name.”

Batman seemed exasperated but Scarecrow could hardly tell with the mask on. “Jon,” he said again. “I’m sorry, let me help you.”

“Help me. You really are crazy, aren’t you Bat? No one can help us. I always help us.”

Batman edged closer and Scarecrow fired the gun only to have to the bullet fly past the man and into the wall. He missed. How did he miss at such close range?

“Jon, you have to let me in.”

“We already let you in. I always knew who you were.”

That made the Bat pause. “You did?”

“Well, I suspected at least. I mean you both showed up in Gotham at the same time, but we dismissed the idea. You were too kind to us after all. But Edward was right about you.”

Wiz was slowly waking up and groaned slightly in the corner. Scarecrow hoped that he would recover. He didn’t want to go through body guards like tissue. He was certain Croc wouldn’t like that.

“Edward wants me to help you. He wants you to get the help you need.”

“Edward is an idiot and a traitor apparently, he should have left Gotham when he had the chance.”

Batman pushed closer to him and Scarecrow’s back hit the wall. When had he been backing up? The gun was still between them and Scarecrow put the barrel of the gun to Batman’s stomach. Batman looked down at the gun and looked up. Scarecrow found himself drowning in impossibly dark brown eyes.

“You just going to start killing all your friends then, Jon?”

“I find my life is less complicated without them, Bruce.” Scarecrow panted, he felt faint and dizzy. If he didn’t pull the trigger soon he risked collapsing into the Batman’s arms and that was not an option. He needed to get it together. He started to squeeze the trigger.

There was a loud thunk and Batman’ eyes went wide before staggering backwards slightly and collapsing on the floor. Wiz moved aside, allowing the Batman to fall, then threw the plank of wood that had once been apart of Jonathan’s workbench, on top of the unconscious Bat.

Scarecrow closed his eyes tightly when they opened; Jonathan dropped the gun in his hand and stared at the unconscious and possibly concussed body of Bruce Wayne.

“What? Where?” Jonathan looked around frantically and saw the man…Wiz, place a sharp kick into Bruce’s side.

“Asshole, throw me into a wall. You okay, Scarecrow?”

Jonathan just stared dumb founded at Bruce’s body, imagining what it would have looked like if he had shot him. Then he started screaming.

“Hey man, cool it, calm down.”

Jonathan was hyperventilating and Wiz was grabbing his shoulders and shaking him slightly. “Come on, we have to go before he wakes up.”

Wakes up, yes, we have to leave.

Jonathan allowed himself to be dragged out of the building and into the storm. The cool rain did nothing to quell his fears. They jumped into a large white van. Wiz started driving and Jonathan leaned his face against the cool glass of the passenger side window.

“You okay, Scarecrow?”

“Dr. Crane.”

“What?”

“You can call me, Dr. Crane.”

And no he was not okay, because Jonathan realized in that moment that he could never kill Bruce. He would have to suffer with his presence. But, he thought, it was better than living without it.

Jonathan sighed, closed his eyes, and soon was sound asleep. Inside his dreams, the storm grew worse.

Bruce awoke to knocking in his brain and a pressure on his legs, which was not good because he vaguely remembered being hit in the head, hard, and being stabbed in the thigh. Bruce opened his eyes and realized that the knocking was not in his head, at least not entirely. Instead, Catwoman was straddling his thighs, putting an uncomfortable pressure on them and wrapping her knuckles lightly on his helmet.

He groaned. “I’m not a ball of yarn to be played with.”

She grinned. “No, you’re an unsuspecting rodent caught beneath my claws.”

For a moment Batman was worried she was going to attempt to kill him, but then Catwoman was standing up and offering him a hand. He took it and stood.

“Croc and his men are on his way. You need to leave.”

“What are you doing here?”

Catwoman scowled at him. “My business. You better go unless you want to sustain more injuries and I doubt Croc will be as nice as I’m being.”

Batman frowned but no matter how much he wanted to go after Jon and stop Croc, he need to go back and regain his bearings first.

He swooped out of the window turning back only once to glance at Catwoman. This situation was quickly getting out of control.
